Lyman Rifle Case Length Headspace Gauge
Welcome you tubers and this is a little. Fast youtube about the lyman rifle. Head space gauge for a 223 Remington and. I'm a newbie to reloading and just. Started working on rifle cartridges just recently and you know it's always a. Little confusing as to how to do this when you haven't done any this before and what I'm using for my dies is the. Lead deluxe rifle die set for 223. Remington which is pretty nice die set and it comes with a full-length resizing. Die and it also comes with a case neck. What they call a next size and collet. Die I'm not going to be using the neck. Sizing collet die just using the full. Length resizing die and what I've done. Is I've taken my cartridges and I've. Deep primed all of them I've cleaned. Then using the stainless steel tumblers. And ended up with a nice clean cartridge. So for example here's one of the cartridges it's been d primed it's been cleaned and I've run it through my. Single stage press once and I've set. This the whaley says by screwing in the. Full-length resizer until it touches the. Top of the shell holder and then. Screwing in 1/4 to 1/3 more so what. Happens when you do that is it correct when you've screwed in 1/4. To 1/3 more here's where you need. Something like a rifle headspace gauge. This is lyman wilson makes them also so what we do is we put this in and it. Should not be on the table itself when. You're doing it but it should be up in the air this particular one no since i don't have two hands I'm gonna leave it on the table as it is just so that i can demonstrate what we're looking for and what we're looking to see is that. At the top of the cartridge is not above. This elevated height or below the lower. Height and should come out right in between and this cartridge does even. Laying down on the table it's just the. Right length after it's been resized now i did about seven or eight of them before i use the headspace gauge and. Actually the cartridges were down a fraction lower and what i had to do was. To back off my diet a little bit by one. Tightening a little bit maybe an eighth of a turn or a quarter of a turn that came out just perfectly know this is a. Very nice device and what it does not do. Though is it doesn't tell you the thickness here's a nun sized case. Still has primer in, and we're gonna put it in there and notice it won't even go in all the way it hasn't been full-length resized yet so you need to resize your case before you put it in. The headspace gauge now the other thing. That you're looking for is this looks. Perfect as far as height right now then. The question is does this case need to. Be resized more is it too long and for. That we turn it upside down and we look. And see where the top of the brass is. And you can see that it's below the. Upper level of the headspace gauge but. Not too short it's just perfect so this particular piece of brass does not need. To be resized if we're sticking up above. This level would need to be resized and this has to be done while it's down on a surface notice that when i have it flipped up. This way it needs to be above a surface because if it's sticking out too low it's going to push up from below and I'm using my finger to push it up, so we don't want to do that now this takes the. Case the place of using vernier calipers. And i have a inexpensive set of. Pittsburg ones these are from harbor freight i also have an expensive japanese one but not too crazy about the. Japanese one mainly because you've got. To use it has a photocell rather than a battery and it tends to have to stop. Working just as i need it the most because the photocell just doesn't keep going now if you have a completed case. And you want to check it we put it in. Like this and we see that above you. Above the table the top of the case. Should be between the two levels and it. Is pretty good here, and we should notice that on the other side when we have it. Flipped over we should notice that. There's just barely any brass showing. And i think you can see barely any brass. Showing there depending upon the light here, so we know that this is a perfect. Case and this is a factory Remington 223. Now this is the lyman rifle headspace. Gage 223 I've seen a lot of criticism for this on the midway side I'm not sure. Why it's criticized but this is like a 20 dollar investment and look if you're. Going to be turning out 223 stuff and takes a lot of effort to do rifle cases you should use one of these this does not tell you whether the case is too. Wide or not whereas the pistol cases and. I do use the pistol case gauges for. Example nine-millimeter luger i use. Those and they're designed a little bit. Differently you can actually tell. Whether your case is properly chambered. Thick enough and will actually fit in. You're right for fit in your pistol butt. The rifle sizing headspace gauge is a. Little bit different and it really helps. To make an accurate rifle cartridge and. I recommend getting one wilson makes. These lyman makes them I'm sure other couple he's makin but this is not more than about $20 from midway or Natchez or any. Of the sites that you go to i hope this. Helps seems to me a lot faster and. Easier than using the vernier calipers. And i think it's very accurate and it. Will tell you particularly what you. Cannot tell easily with calibers is the. Distance from where I'm pointing with my. Finger to where I'm pointing with my finger so those distances are not easily. Measured with the caliber so i hope this. Helps you it makes it really fast for what is technically a kind of slow procedure doing rifle cartridges feel. Free to contact me if you have any. Questions about this video and i do use. The li cartridge dies i like them a lot. And i also use the li presses which i. Find pretty nice thanks.

Hey c-max here into a quick video this. Kind of falls into the what — wha -. Series of reloading pops press papa had. A video about case gauges and this is. One I've been planning on doing for a while i had mentioned i had one come in. And last in the crimping video of the. What — wha — series and this is the one. That i had coming but i wanted to kind of go through and talk about what you can do now typically a case gage is. Exactly what it sounds like it checks. The case now it could check an empty. Case i can check a loaded case it just. Depends on now obviously you want to have. Case gauges and they can be expensive so. It's tends to be something that you kind of do as needed and later on what a lot. Of us to start out with is on the pistol. Rounds we'll pull a barrel like this one. Right here which is this is out of my xd in competition, and we'll use it as a. Chamber guide now the limitation here is. It's only going to check this particular. Chamber well c-max aren't they all the same no they're not we had discussed . The semi minimum requirements which is. Basically the millions mark what they're all supposed to kind of be made to in. Minimum standards so if it fits the sámi. It should fit all the other ones the. Chambers aren't different so if you're. Just using a barrel you're basically only guaranteeing it's going to work in that particular chamber which is associated with that particular barrel this is a nine-millimeter so. Basically what you would do is take a loaded round put it in there and you look does it go all the way in the fall. Out easily is there any dining that seems to work good and then again you. Put in dump it out that's good that. Works good and i believe you get the. Idea now if you give one and it goes. Down but it doesn't go in all the way like that's an issue you're. Probably gonna want put that one to the side and take tear it down and rebuild. It maybe scraps the case but reuse the. Bullet in the powder will we'll get in. That's another video and I'll show you how to do that's real easy as well and let's go ahead and check the. Fourth one perfect okay so in these nine. Millimeter rounds they fit this chamber. Perfectly now this is the lyman ammo. Checker this is a case gage but as you. Can see it's different from this one. This one does multiple calibers. So first of all let's just get into it. See this is made out of aluminum it's. Very heavy it was good and just to read. The proper game they have as the czech quality consistency of loaded ammunition. Rounds and purchased a bmo so i talked. About factories well so you can be going to a match you want to check your factory about well you could do this as well most for any honors you to confirm. Proper chambering each of these gage. Does multiple sloan multiple calibers. Which is very cost effective and this. Will close the easiest go/no-go gage. Available if it fits in a chamber now live in auto. Checkers or precision gauges that allow. It or letter to quickly confirm that their ammunition will fit in the chamber. Machined from 606 1 — t 6 aircraft grade. Aluminum and custom — lee — sammy. Minimum chamber dimensions they have. Three designs form which this is the. Hand gun, and they have a small rifle and a large rifle now I'm not so sure about. The rifle wine and I'll get to that in a. Minute but from the pistol one i like it. A lot of now and the reason for that is in. The pistol rounds we don't typically have to worry about k sling so you slide. It in here and here's the. Nine-millimeter fits flush so this is. One thing you have to keep on the bench and it's ready to go as you're doing various calibers of ammunition so this. Particular one we've got through idiotic nine-millimeter luger 38 and super which. You're not familiar with that round that is a very popular competition round 40. Smith & wesson we have 45 colts not ac. People called you have the 44 magnum and. The 44 special yet in the 38 special in. The 357 magnum and then you had the 45. Acp so let's start and check the p. Here's a 45 acp put it in work good. Let's try this and what you want to do. Is to slide in and does it fit there's a. Fifth clutch or does it. Stick out like that would be a no-go but if it sticks in its below. Flush the cartridge is kidding okay. That's the 40 caliber smith & wesson. That happens to be this one, so we'll do. The same thing perfect and perfect lure. Check the per millimeters that's working. Good that's working good nice working in. It and that was working good now as well. Want you to be aware that they make something very similar to this to where. They're all the same caliber so you'll have a big block and it'll have say 50. Of them at all before 9 millimeters so that way you can check mass quantities in the same caliber very quickly so. That's an option as well now let's go to. This one this is also alignment this is. A case linked headspace gauge this one. Is for 2 to 3 the difference really. Between the two here and why this one is. Actually superior to the other one is. I'm going to show you in just a second. It's this we're talking about Kaitlin. Okay so here's a fired case it has been. Resized but do we need to trim it well. You can get the calipers out and you can see does it need to be trimmed down or you can use a case gauge okay you put it. In now what you're going to see here and. Let's give up so you can see here but. There's a slight cut out here and what. That's looking for is the headstand fit. Above that cutout or is it down in it okay. Well that one fits down in it, so we're. Good on that slides in and out so the case is good on the other end now you. Have the same thing you have a cutout and then give it up here let you see it. Yes and wide on right here you can see. The end of the case sticks out that case. Needs to be trimmed okay son that's the. Advantage of having a case gauge like this for rifle let's try this case once. Again okay she fits here at the head. Stand let's look in here yep you can see that. One as well sticks out beyond where it's. Supposed to that case needs to be trimmed my opinion is this one is. Perfectly fine for pistol because like i. Had said before we're not worried about for the counseling what have you in the pistol rounds in rifle we are so i. Confirm this time now the issue is. These run fifteen to twenty plus dollars. Per counter caliber sorry I'm still. Having trouble speaking and obviously. That can add up very quickly this was. Around thirty dollars and we're doing. You know if you consider the 38 357 and. Then the 44 44 magnums were for special. 44 magnum well you're looking at their. $20 apiece you know you're looking at $80100 here. Plus then you've got eight these things. To keep up as opposed that this will just sitting on the bench you grab it really and it's really easy to use that's why i. Do like the block for the pistol but i. Do prefer these former rifle caliber ok. Well that's going to wrap it up on the case kay just real quick information what more waffle what do we do it for we. Do it to double-check our ammunition because remember reloaded ammunition why. When factory ammunition just isn't good. Enough this is why these are the steps. That you make that your reloaded. Ammunition is superior to factory ammunition because of the vacuum ammunition they're not doing this but. When you're making it yourself you can make better ammunition and you can buy. From a factory ok they'll wrap it up. Remember the safety rules keep your. Finger off the trigger till you're ready to fire always know where your muscles pointed every gun is always loaded please like and subscribe the video and. Please share it thanks for watching have. A great day. You.
RCBS® Electronic Digital Caliper
The Digital Caliper gives instant readings in inches or millimeters. Easy to use and easy to read. Has a range from 0-6" and accuracy to ± 0.001" or. 02mm. Jaw depth measures 1-1/2" outside, 5/8" inside. Hardened stainless steel body lock holds slide in position for measuring constants. Includes a 1.55-volt silver oxide battery and fitted plastic storage case.Alright gonna do a quick video here on the workaday digital caliper purchase. This most all your stores that sell the workaday products cabala's bass pro etc. Most of them will have this item but i ended up going with a digital here i. Like the easy-to-read screen and how the. Functionality of it works but. Essentially i just want to do a real quick video here show you how it works essentially when you start if. You just grab and pull it apart you'll see that it automatically turns on and when you're ready to do your fine-tuned. Measuring you've got a little roll wheel right here and as you start rolling that forward it narrows that gap. So that you can start measuring if for. Any reason you need it — if you were way out here and you need to zero that out it has a zero function right here so you. Can put that as you know ground zero to. Start and it'll start from there obviously will go negative as well now. There is the tool here on the end that. Will basically show your measurements for. Pressing that in that that piece actually goes in and out depending on. What you're trying to measure this is usually folks use that piece when. They're measuring maybe their prom or seating or something like that it's not. A part that i use very often at all but. Um i just wanted to show you a real quick overview of how this product works. Coming over here first of all it comes. In a nice little case actually with some nice protective material um does. Not say workaday on it but it is a very. Nice little case it comes with two batteries so I've got one in there and. Then it comes with a spare but when you. Take it out of the case it will actually. Be off you hit the power button turn it on and you've got your set your inches. Or you know your measurements selector right there and then you've got your zero selector right there so when you. Take your powder in this case I've just got a thing of a tight group here from. Just something I've been using here. Lately you take a look at this let's. Just say we're using nine-millimeter here's your nine-millimeter it tells you your charge your bullet weight and then. You keep on scrolling around you've got your co l your case overall length on. This particular bullet they we ask for a. 1.125 some of them are get up to a. 1-point say 1/5 you know it depends on. What which option you're actually trying to get to but for this particular one it. Says co l 1.125 so i just want to show. You real quick how this works. Essentially you'll pull this out a little bit until you know that your actual bullet will fit into their I've. Got three rounds here that we're going to be measuring today so essentially. There is a flat portion here and a flat. Portion there and then there's more of a almost a knife-edge type selector here. But basically I'll just put it rights in the center of that flat portion there just make sure that it's centered and you know you don't want it kind of cocked to the side or front and backside nothing you just want it centers right there sitting on it like a shelf and then you take you a little your spin dial right here and you actually spend that forward until the bullet nose actually hits that. Center portion there so it will actually. Stay in there if you've got it on row good so I'm reading one point one two. Six on this one so if I'm trying to be. Super accurate what i would do is adjust. My die on the press to get this down to. A one point one two five here in a. Moment i want to show you the difference in these bullets so that you'll actually see really and truly how little difference there is but that was one. Point one two six and all of these came. Out of the same die press and all that one points one two. Five so that one's dead-on and then here. Is a third one once again it's reading. One point one two six so just to give. You an idea here of the actual. Bullet difference here if i were to set. These browns up and you would actually. Take a peek at them i will move the. Camera here some will apologize in advance for a little shakiness but i want you to take a look at the bullets. From a level perspective to see there's. Really you cannot human i cannot tell. The difference in these bullets here bear with me while i move this camera. Down you get this rounds right up to the. Edge here so there you go the left. Bullet was one point one two six centers. Bullet one point one two five. The right one was one point one two six. Really you can't tell much of a difference there my camera might even be slightly angled which could give some get some false look there but. Essentially these things are going to fire out of that weapon especially if you're using something that's not temperamental anybody's going to tell. You know if you're running a glock it's gonna eat anything you throw through it but that little bit of difference there isn't gonna make a big difference to us normal everyday shooters if you're a competition shooter. Yes you might can argue a little something but essentially just wanted to. Show you how that tool works and show you how close you can get and if you get. It anywhere near that one point one two five you're golden so if you got any. Questions or comments please post them in below otherwise i hope you have a great day.
Hornady® Lock-N-Load® OAL Gauges
Easy-to-use, precise overall length (OAL) gauge provides essential load dimensions quickly and reliably. Accurately determines overall cartridge length for proper bullet free run and bullet-seating depth dimensions; firearm throat dimensions; and extent of throat erosion. Simply thread on any Chamber-All Modified Case. Made in USA.Available:
The workaday lock and load overall length gage is an extremely easy. Tool to use to find the overall length. For any particular bullet true cartridge. Overall length or oal is the link from. The bolt face to the point on the lands where the bullet first makes contact this distance when known makes a great. Starting point for load development and is ideal for fire forming most cartridges the tool uses specially. Modified cases that are drilled and threaded on the case head end and have the case mouth opened up just slightly larger than the bullet diameter hornady. Has over 60 modified cases for most. Popular cartridges plus some specialty. Cartridges custom cartridges can be. Ordered directly from hornady if you don't see your cartridge listed on our website or in our catalog to use the. Tool first thread the selected modified. Case on to the hornady gauge move the. Push rod so it is just a quarter inch or so below the case mouth opening place. The particular bullet into the case mouth that you want to find the overall length for remember each type weight and. Brand a bullet contacts the rifling in a different position insert the completed. Assembly into the action and push the cartridge end up all the way into the chamber until is fully seated then while. Maintaining pressure on the assembly push the bullet into the throat with the push rod until it makes contact with the. Rifling use light pressure don't over. Seat the bullet into the rifle now lock the push rod into place with the thumb screw and then withdraw the complete unit from the action in most cases the. Light pressure from the push rod will have provided enough grip on the bullet to leave it in the chamber remove it immediately with a cleaning rod or another easy way to remove the bullet is to simply drop a bullet that is one caliber smaller than the bullet you measured this should easily dislodge the bullet, and they both should slide out the breech in next reinsert the bullet. Into the modified case mouth and measure the overall length using calipers the preferred method is to use a bullet comparator like one of the sinclair comparator designs or use a. Hornady comparator this measurement provides a starting point for adjusting overall length to see where the bullet should be in relationship to the rifling. For overall best accuracy this is. Usually closer to the rifling than magazine length will allow so this measurement is used mainly in single feed applications when first starting. Out you may want to re mesh a few times to get a good reading because the amount. Of pressure, you put on the push rod can change the measurement by a few thousandths remember it is only a. Starting point a great tool to use and. Makes an important measurement easy to find remember all of our products are. Backed by our no hassle risk free guarantee if it doesn't meet your expectations with respect to quality function or value simply return it's. That easy. You.
Hornady® Lock-N-Load® O.A.L Gauge Modified Cases
The O.A.L Modified Cases are available to fit most popular rifle chambers. Must be used with Lock-N-Load (OAL) gauges for proper operation. Made in USA.Hornady® Lock-N-Load® Ammunition Concentricity Tool
Hornady is constantly developing ways to improve accuracy, and this is the first tool of its kind on the market that both identifies and eliminates bullet runout – the tendency for bullets to be out of perfect alignment with other components of the cartridge. Simply place ammunition in the tool, roll it, identify any bullet runout, and use the dial indicator to adjust to zero. You can even use the tool to measure and correct factory ammunition. By truing up the alignment of a cartridge, you'll enjoy improved accuracy and performance from your ammunition.Well welcome back again so we just did. The review on the rcbs case master and i. Thought it was only fair to do a review. On the hardy concentricity tool because. Both of them are actually really good tools one does something the other can't. Vice versa but i have them both and i. Thought it was fair to i do use them. Both so let's take a look at some of the options some of the features these. Things have and go over the. Functionality of this thing so let's take a look. Okay so um a little bit about this. Is a really quick tool i really. Like i like how they designed this so. Let's let's take a look at some of the stuff here nice big kind of knurled dial illness. Or a knob on the side here you loosen. That up this comes out it's always good. To keep a nice real thin coat of oil on these now how this works you have a case. And in here you get a nice real nice. Machined out bevel and that head sits in. There just like sones and you have to spin this so but that just sits right in. There this thing will do little tiny bullets all the way up to you know magnum stuff it'll it'll do a lot so all. You do is just it's a machine fit so. It's a little tight slide that in there. Lock this down and you will get this. Mounted i had to unmount this from the bench, so we're going to get this mounted here I'll show you a little bit more but just a real quick turn here a little. Swing turn and this whole assembly. Slides back and forth that allows you to. Set that where you want to whether you're looking at necker or the bullet total run out whatever so this slides. Very nice on a nice little it almost looks like a pica tinny rail down here very cool and over here you've got your. Little plunger i don't know the official name, but we'll call it a plunger how about that and this thing here is going. To spin a little bit spring-loaded now. You get a couple different options and. Each of these has it's a tapered hole in. The end here different sizes and what. That does is these go in now this is the. Wrong one but it sits on the oh give of. The bullet itself and all kinds of. Different sizes I've got the one in there for the this particular round right now it just sits on the ogive so. You it centers the bullet essentially. What you're doing is you're centering. The head there center the head here into. Here to make it an absolute perfect. Perfect alignment with these two machined parts so let's get this thing. Set up on the bench here screw it back down I'll show you how this thing works but before i do that so if you saw my. Other video on the rcbs case master you'll see a feature on that where you. Can actually check for head separation with the little hook rod in there this. One here has a feature that i don't. Think anybody else has yet at least this. Little screw here it has a little piece. Of now I'm dropping stuff a little piece. Of nylon right there on the end of this screw so you don't do any damage to. You to your bullets but what you can do. Is actually straighten a bullet so if you have a bullet that has too much run. Out in that case you can actually straighten that a little bit sometimes you can get them absolutely perfect if the run out is too much you won't get them perfect but you get them a lot better than what they used to be so. Each of these has their own kind of little feature that's pretty slick so let me get this mounted, and we'll run a. Few through this and show you what this looks like all right so i got this. Mounted back on the bench here it's got four little feet on here couple of wood screws works fine so what. I do is i take a loaded round and that. Just slides up into that cone there and. This might seem a little clumber 'some. But it's actually really easy to get used to i just grab this pull it back. And i just sort of push this out of the. Way here and get that nice and centered. Now what you do is all you do is just. Spin this thing you'll see the indicator here moving and i on this particular. Bullet I've got about oh just about. 2,000 s run out so what you can do to. Correct this is you can go to the low. Side right about there and that's where. This tool comes in screw this in bump it. Just a little bit. And I've got about mm two and a half. Thousands so it doesn't work real well. To be honest on real minimal run out. That two to three thousands you can play. Around with it and get it to work but when you get some of the factory stuff. I've worked with it's you know fourteen thousands out you can just run this in. Bump at ten or fifteen thousand s watch that gauge move see that gauge moving bump that about ten or 15 thousands and then turn it again and you'll you'll see. A huge difference and you know picture a. Circle in a circle in a circle right it's your bolt your chamber your barrel. And if that bolt that bullet has to be perfectly aligned up with everything so it's going out the barrel it's not entering the barrel at a weird angle so. So to be able to help correct this is. A really cool idea and the fact. That it's so universal with you know with all the other options. And stuff and it's really it's just quick it's simple i really like it so i. Use them both the are cbs and the hornet. Ii and they're real easy to change to. You if you want to change this collar this knob spins off just pop your. Turnbuckle there and slide that back and. This thing will just slide out of there has a little spring on there and if you. Want to change these around slip the spring off that one put on the other one and slide this back in. But you're not back on and now you can. Do a different bullet different caliber whatever you want so it's as simple as. That this thing is just absolutely easy. To work with really like it move. This around let slip your turnbuckle there it's just i really like it my only complaint with this thing there's a little o-ring right here and. You can take this o-ring and slide it. Forward and it should help hold this. Dial rod indicator here out of the way. And it does when the o-rings are new but. As you see this o ring is getting pretty old now there's a little knob. Here and this knob unscrew just comes. Right off so you can take this o-ring here slip it off of there and put on a fresh ring they just get dry cracked so I've got a pocket full of them somewhere. I just don't remember where i put them so I'll have to get that changed out so and you can stack several on here and then just you know slide the one you want forward and this one here actually. A bit it'll just break the idea just broke right off so I'll have to just. Get a couple more of those and just stack them up on here and then as they get old from moving them back and forth. Slide the next one up you can also take a little bit of rama oil and just put a. Little a little coating of oil on there. With like a paper towel works great so anyways enough of that so what do i. Think of this i really like it now as most of you know i now have both. Do i think it's important to have one. Over the other or both or just one. Believe it or not i actually use both of. These tools they're both really good tools they both have a feature the other doesn't have i like them both. You know i really couldn't pick one. Over the other so i have them both and. If your reloader like me you'll have. Then both — probably so anyways you know. These things are just they're so simple. Well well-designed you know just they're. Just slick i really like them. They're machined well i really like the. Features there's just no play in there at all. It's just really good a little. Feet there just anchor them down to your. Bench couple screws you can move it pops the screws out put it where you want i have used this without mounted too and. It works okay — you don't have to mount it but i do mount mine so anyways hey i. Hope this helps out I'm going to also put an affiliate link below if you purchase it with that link it helps support my channel doesn't cost you a penny extra if you like what you see. Give it a thumbs up share it that as well. Helps this channel so stay tuned we got. A lot more stuff coming a lot of stuff. We're going to be looking at a new scope out there too called tract it's its a. New company they're only about a year old and I've I've had the pleasure of. Testing the scope so we're putting. Together some footage and hopefully. Here in about a month I'm going to have all that together and i think. You'll be impressed with this scope german shot-glass really nice so anyways lots. Other stuff too so stay tuned if you're not subscribed go ahead and subscribe now because we're probably going to have another probably between 30 and 40 videos on reloading and some shooting. And some product reviews coming up here between now and june or so. So anyways hey i hope you liked the video i hope that helps you out a. Little bit with your reloading stuff, and we're going to continue on here very. Shortly with sort of putting this all together and coming up with a very. Around but we have to go through this you know obviously step by step and get this you know what tools you know you. Can spend a huge amount of money on tools and I've done that a lot and i. Found myself going back to very specific. Tools every time i reload and the rest. Of it sits on my bench and i don't use. It so say watch these series as we. Progress through this and save yourself some money because a lot of the tools out there aren't really that useful or. They're not that accurate and so just. Buy the good stuff up front don't buy. All the other stuff and you're going to be loading some really high-quality very accurate ammo at. The end of this so hey again thanks. Everybody i really do truly appreciate it and stay tuned for next time. You

Hornady® Lock-N-Load® Headspace Gauge
Hello youtube re loaders thanks for. Watching hornet loader here my standard. Disclaimer i am not an employee of quantity manufacturing nor do i have any interest financially or otherwise miss a low quantity products I've been reloading for almost 35 years and for the last 20 years I've been using hornady equipment almost exclusively hence the name orange loader the winery. Logo is a registered trademark of hardy manufacturing grand island nebraska. Today's video will be an examination of. The hornady lock and load headspace kit now the kit comes with. Basically seven different pieces it has. The body which attaches to the traveling. Arm of your caliper it comes with five. Bushings for various calibers also has a. Hex key for the set screw in the body. Now the set screw is used to attach. Particular bushing to the body take the. Set screw and that attaches the bushing. To the body the other side of the body. Is designed to attach to the traveling. Arm of your caliper hey screw you put it. In snug, it up like that and make sure. That the body is square on the. Traveling arm and then you tighten the. Thumbscrew here to attach it to the. Traveling arm now there are a couple. Other bushings available for it there's. One marked f which basically has a 188. Thousands of hole already drilled into. It basically it's a blank so that you can drill out your own hole here for. Calibers that aren't listed or calibers. Won't work with the five bushings that come with it there's also a cal a. Bushing labeled g which is 417 hornets. Those are sold separately another item sold separately is called. The base anvil this is designed to. Attach to the stationary arm of your caliber caliper and makes it a little. But easier to get the head of your. Case flat on the caliper arm like that. Okay now which bushing you select. Depends of course on which caliber you. Are wanting to measure now the kit comes. With a little chart tells you which bushing used for its caliber but if you. Don't have the chart or if you have a caliber that's not listed there's another way to select which pushing to. Use selecting a headspace bushing is a. Relatively simple procedure we want to. Do is find the diameter of the case somewhere near the center of the shoulder now we could use a pair of. Calipers to do this, but we won't get it. Exactly the center and maybe it will although it's not very precise more. Precise way to do this would be too first. Measure the neck diameter just above the. Shoulder on the case that i have in my. Hands that's 255,000 next we'll measure. The shoulder diameter the case just below the shoulder on the case. That i have here at 360 thousands. Now we'll add those two values together then divide by two to get the average of. The two measurements let me get 308 thousands actually we get. Zero point three out of seven five, but we don't need that kind of precision so i rounded it up to 308 know what that. Represents is the diameter of the. Shoulder somewhere near the center not exactly but pretty close now we have. Five bushings labeled a through e each. Has the letter dedication has along with. The whole diameter and we want to find. The one that's closest to 308 as possible now if we look to see that. Bushing a is only 20 mm away from 308. The others are a little higher 42,000. 67,000 so on, so we want to do is use. Label or pushing a for our 223 Remington. Today I'm going to be reloading 308. Winchester so using that same formula I've determined a bushing d with a hole. Diameter of 400,000 s is the appropriate. Bushing to use for 308 winchester now to. Make measurements using the hornady. Head space gauge I'm going close up my. Calipers as far as i can with the bushing the body on and everything on. There and zero out my caliper now i have. The base anvil online if you don't have that's fine it works exactly the same way with or without it and then i. Can make measurements of some fire form brass this brass was shot with my. Running to 700 i simply put the neck in. The hole and bring it up to the handle. Here and i find this is that 1.618 i. Normally measure a few of them to make sure that i don't have an anomaly. And 1.618. And 1.618 as usual whenever you're. Measuring brows with a caliper twist it. Just a little bit to make sure that you get the you get the brass a flat on the. Anvil or on the caliper arm so six 1.618. Is the size for the head spacing the. Results after i fired a cartridge from. My Remington 700 now i can take an. Unfixed cartridge this particular cartridge is from the same box of ammunition as the cases i just measure. And i find that it is one point six one. Two so when a clara cartridge in my. Remington 700 it's going to expand the. Shoulder out to us from one point six. One two out to one point six one ate that's 6/10 I'm sorry at six one. A Thousand expansion so every time i fire. A cartridge it will expand it six 1000s. If i then resize it back down to one point six one two I'm bringing it back. Down by six thousands that constant. Expansion of six thousands out six. Thousands back in it's going to work the. Metal and cause it to fail sooner. Then if it were being worked a little bit less what i can go using the horn d. Head space gauge as i can set my resizing die when i resize this these cases so. That it comes out to one point six one. Six i just drop it by two thousandths of. An inch that way it's only being expanded mm. Been resized down mm a lot less wear on. The on the case and i can extend the life of. My cases now also by doing that the cases will. Fit my chamber a little better give me a. Little better accuracy by using the. Head space gauge i can verify that all of my ammunition has the same head space. Which will give me a little more consistency so it's really doing three. Things for me making my ammunition more accurate making it more consistent and it's extending the life of my cases. Now the measurements that you take with. This is not to be used to compare the. Head space to the sami standards okay. The datum line since these bushings are. Not designed specifically for a particular cartridge it's measuring the. Head space based on a different data line then sammy uses if you want the. Actual measurement to compare to the. Sammy specification you would need. Something like the rcbs precision micrometer this one specifically for 308. Winchester we need one of these for each caliper that you use, and they're a. Little spendy they're between 50 and 60 bucks apiece and since you need one for. Every caliber that you load i can get fairly expensive since the measurements. You take with the headspace gauge can't be used against sammy standards you as well. Can't use it to determine if the head spacing is within the sammy minimum and maximum or something like that you could. Use the precision micrometer or you. Could use the lineman headspace gauge this one specifically for a 308 winchester and you can use it to. Determine whether it's within sammy standards for head spacing now of. Course this doesn't give you any measurements it's just kind of no-go ton a go/no-go kind of device so that. Really doesn't work either for. So the quantity headspace gauge you. Should think of it as a case comparator to be able to compare fired cases with. Unfixed cases or to make sure that all of your resize cases are the same size. And at the same head spacing that sort of thing clearly is a comparator not as. A measurement device for samak to. Compare against sami standards the. Advantage course is that for a relatively low price you get a set of. Five bushings that work with almost any caliber rather than having to buy specific bushings freeze caliper that you use like you would with the rcbs. Precision micrometer so that's the. Quantity headspace gauge it's for. Comparing edge spacing of fired and. Unfixed brass i hope you enjoyed the. Video if you did enjoy please click the like button maybe even subscribe to my channel thanks for watching happy. Reloading.
