What Canned Food to Take on a Camping Trip?

Travelers rarely take canned food with them because it weighs so much. On the other hand, it is a great provision: nutritious, takes up little space in a backpack, and will allow one to eat well in the woods if one is hiking for several days. If a person decides to travel, he should know that not all canned foods are suitable for such a pastime.

What is the best canned food for camping?

  • Canned beans or pie;
  • Corn;
  • Canned fruit;
  • Chicken;
  • Tuna or salmon;
  • Canned pasta;
  • Soup.

Precautions

Poisoning from canned food can be very serious. When buying, you should pay attention not only to the date of manufacture, but also to the conditions of storage. Some canned foods can last a long time if the temperature conditions are maintained, but will quickly go bad in a hike. This is fraught with the fact that in nature, in the woods, there are no medical facilities that can provide first aid.

For example, stew has a long shelf life. It is allowed to be stored for years. Canned fish is the most dangerous. They have a very short shelf life, and elevated temperatures can further reduce the shelf life. In the case of desperation, an expired product can be consumed, but in this case it must be boiled for a long time and when removing the contents of the can, do not touch the mass that remains on the walls.

Checking the canned food

When buying and immediately before drinking, it is worth conducting a few checks. If the jar is leaky or bloated, it is worth refusing from such a product immediately. After opening, the canned food can be checked while it is boiling. If bubbles appear when heating, the product is most likely spoiled.

When opening the jar, it is worth carefully examining its contents. If dark stains or mold are noticed in the sauce, there is no need to doubt, the envelope is spoiled. If the dark spots are on the jar itself, then do not worry. They appeared during storage and no harm to the human body. Never leave the contents of the jar for later. It is worth immediately consume the product in food. The next day, even fresh canned food can become spoiled.

The packaging of the can may have been damaged during shipment. This can be found out by carefully inspecting the can. You can also put the can in water. If it floats, it means that the contents are not fit for consumption. It is not worth wasting water on such checks if the water resource is limited. If there is a strong suspicion that the canned food is spoiled, it is better not to take the risk and throw the can away and move in the direction of the settlement. A person can live a long time without food, but not without water.
