What Foods to Take With You on a Hike

Food for the camping trip

This is a separate chapter for the beginner and professional tourist. In fact, any food from the fridge will not work here. It is very important to understand what kind of food is necessary in the mountain hike, and which is better to forget about for the trip.Organization of food in a hike – a whole science. The so-called layout, that is a meal plan is determined by factors such as the nature and location of the tour, its duration, the composition of participants, and many others. So, going to the campaign, it is important to answer the question: what food you need to take in this in the campaign. After all, the good mood of tourists and their overall health depends on the right diet.

As practice shows, the best option – is when all questions of food in a campaign is engaged in one person – the manager. He or she is responsible for preparing menus, calculating and selecting the necessary products, and distributing responsibilities related to the purchase of food for the trip. It is the farm manager thinks about what to take on a hike out of the food. Compiling a menu for food in a mountain hike, manager must remember about the set of necessary for a person calories and nutrition balance and, of course, to save space in his backpack and its weight. So, how do you choose the ideal, in terms of calories, foods for a mountain hike? How to make a correct approximate daily layout in a hike per person? According to statistics, the average man who leads a sedentary lifestyle consumes about 2300 kcal per day, a woman about 1800 kcal per day. When you climb mountains, this figure will increase significantly. To each value, you need to add 1,000 kcal. At first glance, it seems that you can relax, bring cakes and sodas … But! It does not work. Camping layout is the ability to take both useful and necessary.

What kind of food to take on a camping trip?

First, foods should be rich in carbohydrates: simple (sugar, chocolate, cookies, raisins), which release sugar into the blood in seconds, and complex (oatmeal, buckwheat, cereal breads), which through a long breakdown contribute to dulling feelings of hunger.

Many tourists prefer fast carbohydrates – you can take them with you in large quantities because of their small weight.Secondly, we should not forget about proteins, which keep the muscles functioning and give them strength. However, you have to be careful here: if there is too much protein, the acidity in the blood rises. This means that oxygenation of the muscles becomes more difficult. At the same time, meat protein is not popular among mountain hikers, because meat is heavy and spoils quickly.

Many hikers still carry with them canned meat in tins, but this is not the best option, since the efficiency of such cans is very low because of the weight of the packaging. On our camping trips, we use high-tech canned food in retort packaging, which is much lighter than conventional cans.

Alternative options for getting protein are dried meat, smoked sausage, freeze-dried foods and legumes (peas, lentils, etc.)Thirdly, fats are necessary for normal body functioning. It is recommended to choose unsaturated fats, such as nuts, sunflower seeds, etc., because animal fats are poorly absorbed during intensive physical activity.

Fourthly, every self-respecting hiker remembers the importance of vitamins, especially vitamin C. So, sweet tea with lemon is a good remedy for mountain sickness and a great way to get rid of the symptoms of the beginning cold. And of course water is the classic fuel for the body. It helps maintain normal blood pressure, gives energy, and quenches thirst. It is recommended to drink at least 1-2 liters a day.

It is important not to forget about the need to diversify the diet, because, along with the satisfaction of basic physiological needs of man, a meal in a campaign must satisfy his psychological needs: the desire to eat a variety and delicious food.

Cooking while camping

When planning meals for a camping trip, it is important to think about the process of cooking. In most cases, food is cooked on a campfire or burner. However, factors such as rain, lack of nearby firewood, prohibition of campfires, for example, in nature reserves, limited gasoline or gas for the burner, make cooking problematic, so you need to calculate in advance the amount of gas, parking places and kindling for raw wood. Or include freeze-dried food, which does not need to be cooked, and just pour hot water, which will save time and gas (wood).

Camping utensils

Each camper should have a mug, a spoon, a bowl, and a knife. This is a universal formula that applies to all camping trips. As for cauldrons, it all depends on the number of people. In the old school of tourism it is recommended to calculate as follows: 0.7 liters for each person. That is, if the company has 6 people, then the boiler needs 4 liters. New technologies allow to use integrated cooking systems (jetboil, MSR, fire-maple). Combined with the use of sublimates, this allows you to take just one system with a liter boiler for 5-6 people and much less gas (because of the economy of such systems), which ultimately has a very positive effect on the weight of the group outfit.

Freeze-dried foods for camping

We have already mentioned freeze-dried foods several times. Lets look into what it is. Many old-school tourists are skeptical about this format of food, saying that its not real, its not clear how it was made…etc. In fact, doubts are easily dispelled – you just need to understand the process of creating unusual food.

Sublimates are products from which water is removed by sublimation. First it is frozen, then dried in a vacuum. Note that most of the useful elements are preserved, and there is no need to use preservatives. There is no big secret in the technology of freeze-dried food preparation. And distrust arises solely out of ignorance.

There is a perception that freeze-dried food is not as healthy as regular food, which is purchased in grocery stores. But it has long been proved that freeze-dried food retains more useful components than, for example, in the dried mushrooms or berries.

Compared with the classical spread, freeze-dried food has a number of advantages. Freeze-dried foods weigh little, cook quickly, they are healthy, familiar and varied, you can easily calculate the portion and after eating them there is no need to wash dishes.Conclusion: buying freeze-dried food and add to your own laying – its a good and, most importantly, a useful idea!

A sample daily schedule for a freeze-dried camping trip per person from Harchi includes three meals a day and ensures that there is a hot meal at each meal:Breakfast: it is an energy boost for the whole day. It should be full of complex carbohydrates to feel comfortable until lunch. Options: freeze-dried porridge with fruit (oatmeal, banana, millet, chia pudding), coffee or tea, a cheese sandwich, cookies, chocolate; Lunch: at lunch, we intentionally avoid fast carbs because they can cause unpleasant feelings in the stomach. Option: freeze-dried soup (lentil, pea, borscht, etc.), bread or cookies, cheese;

Dinner: we must replenish all the energy reserves spent during the day and restore the bodys strength. Option: freeze-dried second course (buckwheat and rice with meat, vegetables with meat, couscous with vegetables, pasta with meat and mushrooms, etc.), tea, cookies, chocolate; between the main meals you can make short snacks with oat bars, dried fruits or candy.

The main thing is not to go overboard and in all respects to observe moderation. This version of the layout allows you to reduce the weight of food in a campaign to 300 grams per person per day, which is 3 times less than the usual layout. As well as save time and effort to prepare food. Ration should be adjusted according to the wishes of the tourist. If you eat the same thing every day, it is very likely that the food will quickly get bored and cease to bring pleasure, so we use in our campaigns more than 20 variants of freeze-dried food and high-tech canned food in retort packaging.

Organization of camping meals – what to take in a hike to 1-3-5-10 days
The cardinal rule of camping is, Take more, carry it far away, and eat it all there!

Its getting easier and easier to carry away, thanks to the new lightweight packages. And what exactly to eat, we are going to figure out.

There are many variations of the classic camping menu, traditionally referred to as a layout. It can be both multicomponent and consist exclusively of ready-made meals, which is very convenient and saves a lot of time. But most importantly, food in a hike must be correct, useful and nutritious, able to fully replenish the spent power and energy.

What kind of food should you take on a camping trip?
Lets take a look at the two options for a one-day hike as an example.

Option one is a classic:

Breakfast – oatmeal (at the rate of 40-60 grams of dry product per person) with dried fruit and condensed milk, a sandwich with cheese, tea/coffee.

Lunch – chicken noodle soup (ready-made soup mix from the bag or freeze-dried vegetables with noodles plus chicken filet stew), sausage sandwich, bread, candy bar, tea.

Dinner – buckwheat and beef (buckwheat plus beef stew), bread, cookies, candy, tea.

Option two is similar, but using prepared foods from Cronides:

Breakfast – oatmeal with dried fruit and condensed milk, cheese sandwich, tea/coffee.

Lunch – Homemade chicken soup, sandwich with bacon, bread, candy bar, tea.

Dinner – Buckwheat with beef, bread, cookies, candy, tea.

Each of these two options has its pros and cons. For example, the option with the use of ready-made meals, in addition to unparalleled taste, is ideal when you lack time, water, gas/wood or energy. And the classic option in turn wins in weight when counting on a large group of tourists.

And the assortment of ready meals from Cronids is so diverse that you can easily make a weeks worth of meals and never have to do it all over again.

Be sure to take Borscht, Rassolnik, Bozenina, Buckwheat with meat, Beef with pasta (in the layout of Pasta flotschi), Chicken soup (in the layout of Chicken noodles), Rice with beef (in the layout of Pilaf with chicken).

Calculation of food during the hike is as follows:

Breakfast.

  • Any breakfast cereal is taken at the rate of 40-50 grams, and vermicelli – 60 grams per person;- Hard cheese is calculated at 40 grams per person. The melted in triangles is one per sandwich, which is very convenient;
  • One standard package of condensed milk (280 grams) is designed for about ten people.
    1. Lunch.
  • Bag soup is calculated individually depending on the species, and the exact proportions are always listed on the package;
  • One package of stew for soup is designed for ten people; - Sausage and ham for sandwiches - 35-40 g per person;
    1. Dinner.
  • Cereal for dinner is taken at the rate of 80 grams, mashed potatoes at the rate of 50 grams, and pasta – 100 grams per person;
  • One package of canned meat for the second course is designed for four people.
  • All sweets are convenient to take by the piece, depending on the number of servings.

Also, do not forget about such important components as:

salt (3-5 grams per person per meal);
sugar (15 g per person per meal);
spices to taste.

What about vegetarians?

If you want, you can diversify your menu with lightweight packaged vegetables, and Cronids range of ready-made soups includes Peasant Soup with Mushrooms, which is ideal for people who prefer vegetarian types of diet.

If there is no possibility to heat up food in short hikes, or as a backup in a long hike, enjoy a hot lunch will help a flameless heater. It also comes in handy in winter one-day hikes, in case of bad weather or elementary lack of time for proper cooking. After all, it can be used to heat up food without wood and gas in just 10 minutes.

If you ask why people go camping, you are unlikely to find the answer to eat a lot and delicious food. Rather, the answer is one biscuit for three for the whole day. But that is long in the past.

Tasty and varied menu will provide a great mood of participants, will help them restore physical and moral strength.

And emotion is what you go camping for.

Have a great time outdoors, eat well and eat well, and remember, All roads lead to the table!
