Our Standard Map Cases have a watertight, wide-track zip closure and are sure to fend off rain and waves.
A Jew all right so I want to show you a product I bought from barb Pentagon, I Abdur venture. It’s their map case that they they sell, pretty simple design, but I love it. It’s going to come in useful when I want to do those camps with a map, and you know, use a compass and kind of self, never get my way through a forest that I don’t know. – well, I, don’t know if this is on their website, but it is available so I’ll check with Pentagon and see if they have a picture of this and details on there.
If they don’t, you can send them an email and I’ll. Give you a price I, don’t know the price or I forgot, but start off. The bat you’ve got some nice small tree grade. Nylon, they’re, nice plastic click there to clip on a bag got the Pentagon logo. There got a nice velcro closing flap. There. You’ve got another velcro tab there to make sure it doesn’t fire ammonia, but pretty much. It’s just the purpose army grade map carrier.
So it’s got a pocket here with four slots for pins or whatever you want I’ve pretty off decked it out with my whistle my compass and a signal mirror right. There I think I need a new compass, but this is still pretty accurate and gone strong, I’ve cracked, the screen there, but it works fine, I’ve tested it with other compasses. It’s accurate, so I’ve got my compass in there got a white border black texture.
There I’ll show you why in a minute got it just the big rules before are still in there just because it fits in the air and just another. You know tool to make fire in the moon, see I’ve got a Fresnel lens, I, think it’s called or yeah magnifying glass to zoom up and things as my eyes aren’t the best and I just got the other kind of quarter of the map that I’ve put in here and that’s pretty much it so all fits in this pocket mice and leaks mice and smoke I like the texture out all right, and then you just flop it out and pop.
That sounds bad sorry and put them up there. So that’s the map there I’ll, give you some dimensions of how big it is we’ll start from where the plastic kind of the plastic begins. So it is about 64 inches long by 45, inches wide so and I’ve got a map here at the moment of Oberon there’s a few beautiful pine and State Forest and over on which I’m wanting to explore. So I thought I put that map in there and hopefully next few weeks, so I can head out there with a mate or a couple of mates of mine and start exploring and start practicing my kind of navigation skills with the compass and things like that so and a texture.
Obviously you know we can hold on a point that we may want to go to. You know, draw it there and then obviously a whiteboard marker should rub off pretty easy, which of those but I should use a road or something, but it comes off there. So you know with your texture, you can circle areas. You want to go to point where you are and obviously go from there. So I won’t teach you how to navigate because I don’t even know myself but yeah.
So not there you go. Apparently these are military grade. A lot of the military in Europe use. This exact map carry case so yeah, that’s a product there and pretty good. So, okay, just fold it all folds up and eat Leone itself put that in your pack. Hang it off the hanger off you pack, somewhere and and your I’ve to go so I. What’s the very quick review, cheese, guys I’ll, put the link to Pentagon website on the description and on the video I.
Put it right now about their cheese.
Go but I like to have a map and what I’m going to use like I always used. Oh no, every other bike is my good ol part act and I like I, can carry my cell phone or or my extra class or whatever inside there and notepad, and then I can have a big map here, which is really nice.
Hello out there, subscribers and friends, another video hello out there in YouTube and Google+ land I got a little something to show you, as you see, from the nametag on the video I. Finally got around to doing this video here it is. This is the Condor map case. Now it’s made out of the ballistic nylon that you normally see. It’s got. Molly strap attachment points back here you can do one two or, however, you want to do it. So this is not bad. You can fit a pretty good sized regular map in there start off with we’ve got velcro here that you can attach stuff to tags whatever, then inside there are two slip in that are velcro.
Now this one’s not I forgot that one’s not, but this one’s got a Velcro attachment on to it for ID cards wall. You know anything you’d normally carry in your wallet. If you want to carry it here like driver’s license or whatever your ID card all right, so that’s right there, then we take and reverse this and pull it up this way, and you got a nice little place to put stuff down in here and I’ve got a dry race, pin I, use dry, erase markers on my maps and then I’ve got some different, colored ones here, as you can see for them, then, in the main compartment, which is double zippered, there’s one there and there and I’ve already got it open.
Is the map compartment? Now this not only folds out where you can see what you’re doing, as you can see right here, I’ve got a place marked with that dry race, and it just pretty much watched will right off so that way you can mark on the map itself and I grabbed another one, and let me open it up and take it and, as you can see and ride on it trying to do this one-handed can’t this thing back up and cats trying to run away then we’re going to stay with the pin anyway.
There we go, then are you going to do? Is you can just erase them like this or if you’ve got a cloth, bandana, anything like that and erases and generally erases a little easier than with your finger, but this map, if you wanted to it’s velcro, you can put the map in here in the velcro, not completely waterproof, but it’s pretty good. So if you wanted to, you can pull the map separate and that way you can leave this attached to your belt. Have your map out looking at it doing whatever you want to now.
Also in the inside here there’s a little compartment down in here. I got a my roamers and stuff in one of them yeah this one, the one that you normally have easy access to. This is the one that attaches to the belt. So this is where I put the roamers that that way, they won’t fall out. This is a topo scale. Tell how many degrees on a one twenty-fourth map tells how many degrees your slopes are. So, in other words, you put it up next to your map and, let’s see if the little gremlins inside can focus there, we go.
You see the little topo lines that are spread out through here. Well, you find, whichever one that that matches up to- and that tells you how many degrees of angle- let’s just pick this one right here right there I’m looking in at a 5 degree right in here, I’m looking at see if I can zoom in on that, a little more get it closer I’m, looking at a 5 degree angle, a slope right there and naturally on topo maps and contour lines, the closer together. The lines are the steeper it is, and there are certain indications of Bluffs and stuff like that, and also where this is here.
Caddo mills get to little gremlins inside there to focus come on wake up, focus on it anyway, there’s indications of swampland down there, I’m, not sure. If this is picking it up, I don’t see the focus on it from my end, but anyway, that is that one that I’ve got down in there and then I’ve also got my little protractor here for 124th spin. This over this particular one is for 124 I’m. Looking at the upper right, then the middle one is a 125th scale and the lower left is a 150th scale and then I can take a bearing reading with the string and using the compass marks around the outside edge of my little Romer there.
So that’s how that is, and what that does- and that is the Condor map case kind of like it. I’ve already been using it a little bit didn’t have the MOLLE straps on it at the time, so I couldn’t attach it to my belt and everything, but for the most part, yeah I, like it, it’s pretty cool, compact and I can get a lot more than just I’ve got just this one map in there right now, but I can get a lot more in there. So all right, that’s that I thought I’d share it with y’all y’all.
Take care later I wanna, thank you for watching this video and I hope you enjoyed it. If you want to see more in the future that I put out just subscribe until then later.
It’s a hunky percent, clear polyurethane, two-sided and it comes with these Universal attachment strips the top and bottom, so you can attach it using the lanyard that we supply, or you can loop it over your handlebar and use carabiners connected to a bike connected to a pack. However, you feel the fact is: two-sided means that you can follow your route up and over no need to refold your map quite as much, and the whole thing is sealed, using a really strong, velcro attachment up top, which then has a to roll seal, keep out any moisture so one fold to fold velcro and then that it’s fully waterproof against rain dust, dirt sand and whatever.
In fact, it will even float.

I’m gonna show you how I waterproof maps I recently had a viewer comment and asked me how I waterproofed my maps and that viewer also suggested I make a video on the subject. So I thought that’s a great idea, so today I’m going to show you how I waterproof my maps not only that the technique that I use it certainly waterproof my maps, but it also makes the maps stronger and more care resistant, so stay tuned for that. So here is an older map that I have I’ve had it for a long time.
It has not been treated in any way. It’s been folded a lot and it’s showing a lot of wear and tear and the method I use to treat my maps is going to prevent that from happening before I show you the product that I use and the technique that I use I want to talk options, because you certainly have some options. These days, you can often find maps that are already waterproof, so that’s option number one go and buy a map. That’s already waterproof option. Number two is to seal your map up with some sort of a plastic, and that’s that’s commonly done as well and option.
Three is the method that I use I’m going to treat my map with a map sealant and make it nice and thoroughly waterproof. So here’s just a few examples of some maps that I own that are already waterproof. This one is map I’ve had for a long time. It’s printed on Tyvek Tyvek is very strong and very waterproof and makes makes a great map. These maps are newer. One is made by Chris Mar and one is made by gem Trek fairly reputable map makers. They are printed on high glossy paper, but they are very waterproof and very durable.
So if you choose to coat your maps in plastic, the most obvious way to do that is to have your Maps laminated. Most business supply stores will do that. For you, this is a map that I ordered online. It came in this nice convenient eight-and-a-half by 11 format. It’s a route that I want to do and it came pre laminated, which is kind of nice, except that it doesn’t fold very well. So that’s the downside of laminating your map. Another option you have is to use contact paper.
This is clear and sticky on one side, you can find this at most craft stores. It’s one way of laminating your map at home. It works quite well, except your maps are going to be a little bit heavier and they’re going to be still difficult to fold and another option you have to cover your maps with plastic is to use packing tape. Packing tape is clear and sticky on one side, it’s not ideal, because you’re gonna have to work to cover a map with this, but in a pinch, it’ll do alright.
So those are clearly options but to me they’re not ideal. The park that I like to use is this: this is called map seal by aqua seal. It’s a a map sealant that I use all the time. You can find this at REI in the United States, for about thirteen dollars or here in Canada, at Mountain Equipment co-op. For about eleven dollars, it comes in this 8 ounce bottle or 240 milliliters a bottle. This size will do about 8 maps. What I like about this is. It goes on easily it not only waterproof my maps but also strengthens them and keeps them from tearing map.
Seal works really really great, but there are a couple of other similar options. Nick wax makes a product called map, proof which is harder to find, but I understand it works very well, and some friends of mine have used Thompson’s WaterSeal. They recommend that the spray version works really really well to seal your map and make it waterproof. So this is how I treat my maps. The first step is going to be to roll that new unfolded and rolled map on a nice clean surface and hold it down with something heavy I live in Canada and coach hockey.
So I’ve got plenty of hockey pucks laying around the house yeah, that’s pretty good. What you’re gonna need next is, of course, your bottle of map seal, a small bowl and a foam brush I like to use a nice 3-inch wide brush nice wide brush. Take your maps he’ll, give it a really good shake according to the directions and pour a little bit of it into the bowl next you’re going to want to spread that around very very evenly and thinly on the map. Once you get a corner of the map, wet you’ll find that you don’t need the weight to hold it in place.
You can do this, however, you like I, tend to coat one side of the map or one now one half of the map working the brush in both directions: I’m trying to apply a very, even and very thin coat to the map when I’m done, one half of the map will switch and do the other side again North brush both directions, trying to get a nice even thin coating. You really want to apply this as thinly as possible on your map. This is gonna. Allow your map to dry more quickly and you’ll be able to cover more maps with it.
A nice thin coat also won’t soak through the paper and cause your map to stick to the counter there. That’s it simple as that. That’s one coat on one side. We’re going to let this dry a little while and then we’ll do another coat on this side before we flip them out and do two more coats so as per the instructions, I’m going to apply two coats to either side of this map and after each coat I’m gonna let that map dry there it’s been about an hour and the map is nice and dry, so I’m going to apply another coat to this side, and although this map is glistening, it is not very wet I’m, just applying a very, very thin coat.
I can’t stress this enough. You do not need to soak the map just apply a very, very thin coat. That’s all you need to treat them out there. That looks really good nice and complete that put my stuff away, rinse my brush and wait an hour when I come back. The map is nice and dry I’m, going to flip it over and again we’re going to treat this other side with two coats again about after an hour. The paper should be nice and dry and we can apply our final coat. I’ve run out of products and add a little bit more in my poll and then the final code.
When we’re done we’re going to recover any of the map seal, that’s left over in the bowl seal that tightly for another map sometime in the future, they’re after one more hour that map is nice and dry I’m going to flip it over. It looks perfect and finally, when you’re all done, you’re gonna want to let this map sit and cure for 72 hours before you use it all right guys. That’s it thanks a lot for watching I hope. You got something out of this video if you did and you enjoyed the video please hit like share and subscribe and certainly leave some comments below those things all helped.
