I’m r lee ermey when I was a kid my grandad gave me my very first knife. I used it every day on the farm having that knife taught me lessons about the value of good equipment, and I learned it over and over in the military as well. Today, my philosophy is simple use the best that you can period it’ll pay for itself many times over and sog feels the same way as I do about it. It’s reflected in the performance of every knife and tool that they make. I chalk it up to good old-fashioned pride.

Now. Those are some of the reasons why I use sog and I have for a lot of years now, since 1986 special ops law enforcement, tradesmen and outdoor enthusiasts have relied on sog to produce the toughest and most reliable gear in the industry, so whether I’m in the boonies hunting in the field with the troops or at home in my own garage, it’s just nice to know that I can depend on sock. You.

TheTentLab New Improved Deuce(R) Ultralight backcountry shovel

3
  • Made in USA
  • First, save yourself a ton of time and use the Deuce UPSIDE-DOWN to probe the top 3-4” for rocks or roots that might spoil your poop-hole location; probing like this is a fantastic and unique feature of the Deuce; right-side-up, the scoop is large enough to quickly remove dirt; further into the hole, use it upside-down again to break up hard dirt and pry out rocks; it provides up to a 4x increase in digging power when used this way
  • Three models; #1 is the lightest at .45oz (the weight of just 2 1/2 teaspoon of water) for only the most fanatical weight fanatics; the #2 is the backpacker’s classic, .6 oz (just over the weight of 1 tablespoon of water) for more normal weight fanatics (2.5 X 6.8 inches); and the #3, a .97oz beast; big, strong and most capable of handling truly awful hole-digging situations (2.6 X 8 inches); use the length to gauge the hole depth; full 6” to 8” deep is a proper forest poop hole
  • Made in the US and S. Korea of aerospace grade, US-produced 7075-T6 aluminum that meets the AMS4045 standard (the alloy alone does not guarantee high strength); the go-to aluminum for satellites and aircraft; HIGH STRENGTH aluminum makes high strength products; this grade of aluminum is available in only a handful of countries with technology and quality driven supply chains; manufacturer’s lifetime warranty
  • Tumbled until fully de-burred; smooth, rounded edges and shape is much more comfortable that angular shapes and raw die-cut edges
  • Anodized in fun colors to prevent corrosion and surface damage; prevents dark smudges from bare aluminum on your hands; have some fun, pick a color like you would a lolipop; these trowels really help you doo-doo the right thing; a great Leave No Trace aid

Hi, I’m mike seacoach here, I’m here to deuce potty trowel. These days we make three: we have the deuce number one which is six and a half inches tall. So it’s about the minimum depth for a proper poop hole and for a cat hole in the woods it weighs 45 ounces. So it’s incredibly light that’s about as much as this much water. Now we have the deuce number two, which is the evolution of our original deuce of spades, this one’s seven inches long and it weighs 0 6 ounces, which is about that much water.

And finally, we have the deuce number three, this one’s eight inches long. So you can. This is the depth of a full depth cat hole and it weighs 0 95 ounces, which is this much that seems kind of academic, so my favorite way to show people just how light these are. Is this? You can’t do that with your everyday poop, trowel, okay, obviously uh they’re, a sheet metal product, uh they’ve been bent into a curve for strength, and it goes you know thinnest.

So this is the lightest duty model for ultralight fanatics, only medium which is sort of the sweet spot for most backpackers, and then we have the heavy duty model which is made out of the thickest material and is the largest the basic strength idea behind. These is uh very much like something you all know when you have a piece of paper, you curve it and it gets quite a bit stronger. So that’s the basic sort of engineering principle behind these.

The other thing is, is they’re made out of high strength, aerospace grade, 7075, t6 aluminum, and it’s all it’s all: u s, aluminum, no matter where we make them. That turns out to be pretty important. We take for granted that we can get products that are really strong, 7075 t6 aluminum that passes ams 4045 is something anybody can get on the internet in the us, but other parts of the world. That is absolutely not the case, so here’s some of the stuff from ours- and you can see it- has it- has a lot of spring back.

So this is a high yield strength material. Now this is a sheet metal part that was came from china. It was also sold as 7075 t6, and I can tell you from experience that you can’t get 7075 t6 high strength t6 in china, unless you’re, a chinese aerospace manufacturer, there’s just no way you’re going to get it and sure enough. This is what this stuff does so very low yield strength. This is not a high strength, material, it’s being sold a 7075 t6, but it’s definitely not high strength, 7075 t6.

That has implications beyond just the strength. Our deuces are all tumbled, so they’re put into these gigantic bins filled with abrasive material chunks of it hundreds of pounds and they’re thrown in there, and then the whole thing is is agitated so that all of our edges are nice and smooth and round. This is not a sharp edged product. It’ll, never cut you. If you don’t have the high tensile strength the high yield strength on these, though, what happens? Is you just end up beating the heck out of the thing? So if you see a sheet metal product- and it’s obvious- it probably should have been tumbled, but you see in the comments on it that maybe it’s got sharp edges, there’s a good chance that the reason for that is because it can’t be tumbled.

It’s a low strength, material. Some of the other design features of the deuce are it has four little tiny teeth right on the very front of it, so that as you’re digging, you can cut small roots, you can nick them and then they can chop through with the rest of it. That was a nice little refinement we added a couple years ago, then, on this end it has a slightly wavy edge so that it increases the friction. So when you’re pushing on it, you don’t have to just rely on the little notch right here and then everything about the top is rounded so as you’re pushing you know, these are sheet metal, they’re not going to cut you, but there is a limit how much force you can use before they start to be uncomfortable.

As you push on it, you don’t have any hard edges that are trying to dig into you and last but not least, you notice that the handle is very short and very flared right here, and the reason for that is because, first of all, when you’re digging a poop hole, you know they’re they’re, not very big around. You can make poop holes with these, that are, that are like just four inches across, but eight inches deep.

It’s it’s a really dramatic cylindrical hole you can make with these and having a short handle is very much a part of that. If it’s a long handle it it bumps into the edge much more easily. The other thing is, it increases the strength dramatically, so we’re not so much worried about this strength. This way, it’s the strength. This way that we have to worry about, because all of these have the limitation of being the curved piece, so they’re strongest this way, not that way, the very top has also been flared so that when it’s in the dirt, you can pull it out more easily and there’s nothing special about this hole and whenever you have a piece of backpacking equipment, there’s always this interaction between the product and its features and how it’s made and the technique that’s used to make the most of it.

So the deuce actually has a really interesting and important feature. This thing has actually been designed to be used upside down, so you put it in your hand this way or like this, and you notice there’s about twice as much area along this edge than there is along this edge. So as you’re putting pressure on it, you actually are doubling the pressure into the ground, so you can dig and probe and bust up hard spots hard dirt, clods extremely well with this trowel used upside down and that’s uh, now very much a part of how the whole thing works.

When you do that, it really really ups the satisfaction of having one of these things. It really makes the thing so much nicer to use. We have a lifetime warranty on our deuce of spades. Does that mean you? You can’t break one, but if you do send us a picture and uh three dollars postage in the us and a brand new one’s on its way, we’ll even let you switch models if you want um, you know that’s something probably worth mentioning.

Is that uh, you know sometimes the ground. You know it’s just way too hard. There are places where you, you really shouldn’t, be trying to dig a poop hole, and sometimes you don’t find that out until later, but I mean uh I’ve run into ground. Where you need this, I mean there really is dirt. You’re, not gonna, go anywhere without a pickaxe and um. You know, by the same token, there’s rocks there. You’re not gonna, get you’re, not gonna, budge them without anything less than a crowbar, maybe even a pike.

So you have to be a little bit judicious about exactly what battle you want to fight making these poop holes um. You know and that’s in direct trade, for the super ultra lightness of these things. Um. Last but not least, we obviously we make them in lots and lots of colors. This doesn’t have to be a grudging pur. Just that where you know I got to build, you know, dig a poop hole. I need a trowel. These things are fun um.

It’s really more, like you know, picking out a lollipop, that’s that’s our philosophy. It’s all these different colors, just really cool piece of gear. Okay, um, let’s go dig some holes. You.

Oh yeah, it’s time to talk about this guy exclusive and so yeah we’re talking about camping travels again, if you guys don’t know, this is one of the things that my channel appears to be well-known for I have no idea why, but for some reason, I have a playlist on this exact topic about camping trails. Up here in the cards be sure to check it out. This is I think maybe my sixth trial that I’m trying out or testing at some point- and this, of course is it looks very familiar. It’s the trial, formerly known as the deuce of Spades, and it became just the deuce and it’s now.

This is a deuce too, and so this will be in your REI I believe in February and you’re, seeing it here, I think for the first time here on YouTube and there’s some minor changes that gone on with it and I just kind of want to discuss some of those and yeah. You guys are gonna laugh, but it’s just kind of what I do now and I kind of go over some of the features that I have noticed. Some changes that have been made and we’ll talk about kind of how I feel about just the overall. It sounds funny digging experience using the deuce too so right away.

When you look at it, you see some minor changes, but you can notice them. First of all, you have this more serrated edge right here. The nice part about the deuce to and how it has those serrations right there on the cutting edge. Is that, unlike if you remember, the Vargo dig dig tool, they kind of had the serrations on the side right here and they were kind of really super aggressive. Actually, every time I’ve carried it I’ve always been kind of paranoid about it, ripping into like a stuff sack or my pack or any mesh.

You don’t have to worry about this being too aggressive and so I really like that. Another change that’s been made on the juice too is it has a slightly wider handle, so it’s supposed to make it a little bit stronger and they have kind of some finger. Undulations is what kind of mic from tent lab has described a mess and just kind of help, with overall friction of your grip when you’re digging and so I found that the digging experience honestly on the juice – is very, very similar to the Chi Wiz in terms of overall comfort, I kind of have to do further testing to the determine that, but I didn’t feel uncomfortable.

So remember if you notice some of the other travels I’ve tried out I found that usually it will dig into the palm of my hand right here when I’m digging and it can be pretty uncomfortable and so the deuce to and Mike how they decide to kind of go about. This is to try to make sure that people are aware that you can actually use the deuce of spades and it’s kind of following models not only like this, but actually when you have harder earth, you should turn it around and dig this way and I did try that and kind of and more simulated hard dirt, and you guys will see the footage here and there throughout this video, but actually I did find that it was because it’s a smaller kind of cutting edge.

It was able to kind of go really well into the soil, especially through kind of tough grass and roots this direction. This way, if I was kind of trying to cut that way into some kind of harder earth, it would have had a more difficult time, but I noticed it right away and what mike recommends you do, and he includes a really good set of instructions with us. But he suggests that when you have hard earth you kind of cut around using this edge and then pry using this edge. If you can run across that, it’s very thin, and so he also made sure that you knew that you know this axis.

If you were digging into the scoop, is the strongest part, and so it’s actually kind of remarkable, just like the Chi whiz and how strong this is along its axis, of course, the other way. So if you try to pry it the other way, you probably will bend it, because it’s not meant you can destroy this. It’s not meant to go that direction, but if you’re digging this way normally I mean you can’t really can’t really bend that you want to draw back and I can see using it. This way is if you’ve started digging it.

This way is that your hands are gonna, get dirty. So if you’re in really muddy soil or something like that and your hands are gonna get dirty. If that’s a problem for you, then you’re gonna have an issue with it, because not only are you then getting the handle dirty, you’re, gonna, flip it around and use this part to pry it. So, just something admire to consider now the difficult thing with trowels like this one there so thin. You have a lot of people who complain about handle comfort and that’s kind of one of the trade trade-offs that you have honestly.

If the pricing remains the same, it would be something that I would definitely consider, because these are usually around $20 and sometimes you can buy seconds from their website. It’s exclusive of REI until May, and so you may not be able to get seconds until then, but it I think it’s worth picking up for 20 bucks if that’s stays in the same price range comparable to the Chivas Big Dig, which was I think about 40 dollars. Shipped of course, I’ll be testing this. This is just an overview thanks for watching guys and thanks for putting up with the antics on this channel peace.

Point six ounces point six ounces and this is aluminum. It’s not titanium.

BCA D-2 Dozer Hoe Ext Avalanche backcountry shovel

7

The D-2 EXT Dozer is the ultimate tool for “strategic shoveling” and digging out stuck snowmobiles. The Dozer easily converts to a traditional shovel making it adaptable to any backcountry situation. And the folding saw makes an effective tool for cutting away debris.

  • Includes Folding Saw
  • Extendable and packable.
  • backcountry shovel

  • Package Dimensions: 25.5 x 10 x 4.25 inches; 2.15 Pounds
  • Item model number: 23B0100.1.1.1SIZ
  • Manufacturer: BCA
  • Type: backcountry shovel

Hi I’m Andy from backcountry access- and this is our d2 ext shovel. It’s meant to function really well as a hoe, but it can also be converted to a traditional shovel features, a lot of the same stuff as our other as our other avalanche shovels. It has. An overlay shaft on here allows us to use a little bit less than that or without compromising strength, so we’re able to make it really light.

It comes with our b2 blade, which is our middle sized blade. So there’s no neck sticking up and we actually weld that piece in there to actually add some strength to the shovel instead of just bending that metal around the shovel shaft and then again on the front, we have our nice relief pattern that adds a little bit of torsional rigidity to the shovel blade if your shovel one out there and some in some hard snow so right now, I’ve got this thing set up as a hub.

If I wanted to switch this around and just use it as a traditional shovel, I, just reviewed the blade just slide this piece down and there we go now. We’ve got your shovel ready to function in traditional mode. The handle on this thing is fully extendable to you, so you can get good leverage, it stop digging the deeper snow so that fully extends a real nice feature as well.

When I go back into the hoe, remove the blade slide your shovel handle down and put the blade on and there you go and that’s the d2 ext.

Hi Bruce edge, really here co-founder and vice president of backcountry access here at our Boulder Colorado headquarters, I’m here, to tell you about the d2 EXT with integrated saw. This is definitely our most technical shovel. Not only does it have an integrated wood saw, but it can be converted from traditional shoveling mode into hoe mode.

What this does is. It makes it not only excellent for extra gating avalanche victims that are buried in Avalanche debris, but it’s also very efficient at extricated snowmobiles that are stuck in a tree or in deep snow. Let’s talk through some of the features here. All of our shovels, including the d2, have an oval shape that makes it much stronger when you’re chopping, snow and prying, which allows us to keep the weight down.

The shaft and blade are both heat treated, which makes them very, very strong, and it’s an extendable shaft, so that when you’re digging, of course, you get more leverage. So this is how you would use it in typical, shoveling mode chopping and scooping I can also be converted into a whole configuration so that you can paddle snow. So, if you’re digging out of duck sled, it’s much easier if you paddle the snow away from the sled, then if you’re got a vertical orientation same thing, if you’re digging Avalanche debris, if you have more than one person, it’s a good idea to have the first person upfront chopping, the snow and moving it back and the second person just paddling it out in the back of the hole.

If you remove this part of the shaft you’ll, see that inside we have about 70 inch. Stainless steel wood saw with razor teeth for cutting through limbs. You can use this to build a fire if you need to, and also to extricate your sled. If you get stuck in a tree, we do recommend and if you’re wearing an avalanche airbag. You keep one shovel on your back at all times, so that if somebody gets caught an avalanche and you need to dig them out, you always have it with you, not on your slab, not on your tunnel bag.

The one for a lunches is on your back. We suggest carrying an extra one on your sled with your tunnel bag with all of your other emergency backup equipment, so that you never have to take your avalanche airbag off to extricate your sled. If you get stuck so that’s our d2 EXT saw also known as the dozer, our most technical shovel. It can be converted from traditional to home mode, and it has that integrated wood cutting sauce and make it super efficient for not only digging people out of Avalanche debris but extricated.

Your stuff sled.

Hi I’m Andy from backcountry access- and this is our b1 ext shovel. It’s our most popular selling shovel. It has a fully extendable handle on it, making it really ideal for most shoveling situations out. There features include our T grip handle, making it really packable and also our oval I shaft down here. So the oval I shaft does a couple things. First, the shape allows us to actually use a little bit less metal in the construction, so we’re saving weight and, in addition to that, this washes ensures that your shovel goes together really quickly sits that handle can really only go in two ways: it can go into the front way or backwards, and it works either way.

There’s just no need to spin around and try and line up the pins so assembles really quickly out there. We also have all the way here. This is our key one blade. It’s the smallest blade. We make notice, we don’t have a long neck sticking up. We seed that down in and that just allows the blade to fit in your pack a little bit better. In addition to that, you’ll notice. On the back here, we now weld that piece in so that just adds a lot of strength to the shovel, we’re not bending the blade around the shovel shaft we’re actually welding that piece in there, which adds a lot of strength.

Then, if you look on the front of the shovel here, you’ll see we have this relief pattern in here and that really helps with the torsional rigidity of the shovel. So if you’re digging in any harder snow out there, that’s just going to eliminate any flex them and make the shovel a little bit stiffer when you’re digging and that’s our b1 ext our number one selling shovel. You.

Ext with saw the nice thing about this system is that when you remove the saw from the handle, you still have a fully functioning shovel. So even when these tools are separated, they’re both still fully functional, the a2 comes with our medium-sized blade and has a fully extendable handle on there. You can take the blade and handle apart for easy storage in your pack. The blade on this thing is 28 centimeters long. It works really well in snow and wood and also has measurement markings on the blade.

If you’re using this in a snow pit to isolate columns, you can see exactly how big you’re gonna need to cut those and that’s the Arsenal saw and the a2 ext.
