I’m tyler with trail for two and it has. Been a while since we posted a video lately and especially together so as we. Are kind of preparing for this upcoming backpacking season just like every season and just like I’m sure most of you are doing at home right now I’m kind of refining your year list looking through your gear seeing what gear needs to be updated seeing what gear you can cut weight on and in the process of that. One of the items that we came across was a rain jacket, and we weren’t happy with. Our current rain jackets and wanted. To upgrade to something that was lighter and kind of would fit into more of the. Ultralight or lightweight backpacking realm, so we need came across this these. Are the ori helium two rain jackets and. The women’s small comes in at five point. Five ounces in men’s i have a man’s. Small here and it’s five point seven. Four ounces so as you see they’re. Stuffed into their own little pockets here close with the velcro but something. That we in doing the research you know. It is called the helium so obviously indicates that it’s pretty lightweight. Something that we wanted to do was obviously have a functional rain jacket. That was still in the realm of that. Lightweight category and so there are other competitors out there that have similar items that are lightweight rain jacket options but. In reading most of the reviews that we had read and just doing the research this is what the as far as features go. This is what we decided would best fit. Our needs so another one that we were. Looking at there was a close competitor was by anti-gravity gear i don’t know. The exact model name of it but overall the helium came out on top, so we’ll go. Ahead and talk about some of those features so it doesn’t actually have a lot of features but one feature that’s pretty cool is on the inside it has what’s called a pertex shield and it. Really is waterproof I’ve been out in the storms in this thing and i haven’t. Got it gotten wet at all it’s really breathable more breathable than other waterproof. Jackets that I’ve had and there aren’t things like pit zips to reduce weight and things like that but it doesn’t need them because it is more breathable than. A lot of other jackets out there and in part of their success in cutting the. Weight you don’t have things such as pockets but if you’re wearing this jacket while you’re hiking if you’re through hiking pockets you know you have pant pockets you don’t necessarily need a pocket for your jacket to stuff things. Into so it is a pretty basic functioning. Rain jacket in that regard there’s been something that is not too great for me i don’t wear pants with pockets I’ll usually wear yoga pants or something like that when I’m hiking and so it’s a little bit inconvenient not to have the pocket but it ends up being okay because as you can see this it’s pretty roomy and there’s enough room to fit another jacket underneath and i do get really cold so it’s nice to be able to fit another jack underneath and I’ll just use the pockets in that jacket it does. Have this chest pocket that’s cellphones. I wish so you can fit snacks so phone. Anything you want in that chest pocket it also has this inside pocket which the. Jacket stuffs into and you can use it. For whatever you want as well um. Something that i kind of set this apart. From the other jacket also was the hood. And also you see as it’s high you have a. Hood that is adjustable the brim isn’t. Very sturdy it’s pretty thin and flimsy. But is to be expected by the typical. Adjustment here on the hood and it does cinch pretty well here so if you were concerned about wearing some sort of. Down jacket underneath it does a nice. Job sealing off any entry points of. Water so you would be safe to wear a down jacket underneath so that’s kind of what she do I’m getting this great if. You can’t you can’t see how I’m sure but. It does be dried up like she said she has won it out in the rain i have as well. We live in washington and so this is. Something to that i mean kind of testing out I’m just kind of thrown on running. Errands to kind of see how it kind of works out and it is worked out quiet. Nicely so this is something that we expect to be in our packs for a. While when it comes to backpacking for. This up season so on the on their site i believe. It if they run right around $100 maybe a little bit more 115 but it is a very. Reasonable option for a lightweight rain jacket something that taylor was saying. Is that the brim is flimsy actually. Comparatively, to other jackets it’s not flimsy it has something like its kind of stiff floozy for a really durable. Heavier rain jacket but stiff for a. Really lightweight jacket and that’s something I’m actually worried about I’m afraid that I’m going to mess up the brim when i stuff it into its pocket. That i can be stuffed into these like that i don’t have any complaints that. Would make me not want to bring it along and i like it a lot it works really well. For any rain or outdoor needs i would. Wear this in a really heavy storm and it’s a purchase that we really love this. Year.

Had a great weekend last week i had a great time back packing up in pennsylvania on the appalachian trail i had a couple cold nights i had a nice rainy day as well but you know what it’s. Always good to be out there regardless of what the weather conditions are so if. You watch the video you were able to see that i debuted my brand-new rain equipment and it was great that it. Actually rained during that time the fact that i just got it so allowed me to thoroughly test it out and to really experience it firsthand to see how it’s going to perform in the elements that I’m going to experience in the future so. Now that I’m able to know that i was able to thoroughly test it out and see what. It’s all about i feel comfortable enough to give you guys my official review and my thorough opinion about the jacket itself so here’s my official review on. The outdoor research helium to rain jacket let’s go ahead and get into it. So okay guys i got the jacket right on. Here for you guys again here comes my. Official review of the outdoor research helium to rain jacket i have always been. A fan of outdoor research you know they have a fantastic reputation the. Engineering that they put into all their products is just absolutely amazing you. Now certainly i had some other great options there for me for a nice lightweight rain jacket however I’ve always been very loyal to outdoor research i understand they have a great reputation for a particular reason and thus far with the performance. Of this rain jacket i have been very impressed very pleased and. Honestly i just love this fricking rain. Jacket so let me get into the details. For you here a little bit so this is called a pertex shield it’s a two and a. Half layer ripstop nylon making it very. Nice and lightweight only coming in at six point four ounces this still. Provides you with a fully waterproof of fully waterproof seal as well as some. Wind proof protection as well which i think is really fantastic if you. Come on down to the front here it does have a fully taped zipper right down the. Middle as well as it does provide a chest pocket up top here with again a. Fully taped zipper i kind of like what they did there how they didn’t put any pockets down below here because. Especially with a backpack waist belt strapped around you’re not going to have access to these pockets anyway however this pocket just keeping a. Little quick grab items last time i. Think i just kept you know my whistle sitting right up front here just ready to go for me it was nice and convenient as well as on the interior the jack you. Do have fully taped seams fully sealed. Seams to again give you that full waterproof seal coming on down to the. Waist belt here you do have a small little shot cord a little cinch cord you. Tighten up around the waist I’ve noticed. That this jacket you know it’s not a crazy long one but what’s nice is it does it is fairly nice and snug around. The waist I’ll still give you giving you some good mobility last week. Out back and i didn’t have any use for that little cinch cord i thought this was snug enough it’s performed great however you know i wouldn’t be surprised in the future if i do tighten things up just to really seal myself in there on both the wrists you do have and. A little bit of an elastic here to make this sleeve a little bit tighter last. Week as well when i had gloves on and pull the sleeves over the top it just created a nice snug waterproof seal no. Air was able to get in to cool me down the water was able to get in i was very. Very happy with the way it performed so it does have a little bit of a zipper. Guard right on the inside up near your chin here and i think that was really great on their part so it reduces the irritation on your chin when you have. This fully zipped up creating that full. Seal right around your face line there you know last week oh i had to have this. Think fully zipped up and i definitely you know there’s definitely helped I’ve had a rain jacket before where there was no guard there and i mean i would have to constantly sip it down just because it would even scratch me and irritate me so much so i thought that was a really nice little look on their part it’s just a little tiny flap it only goes from about here to here so really. It’s it gives you just enough coverage without really adding a lot of weight onto the entirety of the system if i flip the hood up here for you so it. Does give you a little bit of a brim on the front nothing crazy substantial it still gives. You full line of sight and everything as well however still as you can see it’s. Just a small little grim it comes out far enough to give you some of that extra rain protection i know how frustrating it is sometimes in heavy. Rain to where it’s just getting into your eyes getting into your face and you can barely even take time to look up so keeping something that’s you know something nice and small but still gets the job done again great job on their part you know finding that nice balanced fully zipping this up here for you as. You can see it does create that nice. Seam all the way around your face line so provide some breath ability which is nice but certainly as well you know so. Keep that nice seal in gives you that full waterford protection the wind for protection and it’s still really comfortable coming around to the back. You can see here it does have that nice little cinch cord so you can pull on that and tighten up around the hood there so it really treats it nice and snug so when you turn your head the. Whole hood is going to go with you so it. Gives you some really good mobility so that you know you can freely just turn your head as you can see I’m doing full 180 degrees there and the whole hood is. Moving with me I’ve had rain jackets before we didn’t have that cinch cord and every time i turn my head i would basically be looking into the side of my hood obviously while hiking i need to. Have that range of motion to be able to see things around me to be aware of things around me and as well just on the. Comfort level inside of it just to have that full range of mobility just makes. This jacket really nice and comfortable having it is so lightweight it feels. Like you’re wearing nothing you know it’s not some thick thing where you can feel like your arms are being restricted. You can feel like your body’s being restricted gives you full range of motion feels like there’s nothing on you just very old just overly just. Incredibly impressed with this product so far so let me take the hood up here. Real quick so this jacket does pack down. Really nice and small it’s extremely. Thin extremely lightweight but still extremely high with the performance now. For myself with my backpack i just i literally just crumble the thing up and stick it in however on my left hip here on the. Interior of the jacket I’ll show you in a second there’s actually a small little pocket on the inside to where you can collapse this thing down to be about basically the size of an index card so. Can become really nice and small so especially for people who need to put it into a suitcase or something like that to travel around the country travel around the world it’s going to take up little to no space and obviously at 6.4. Ounces weighs absolutely next to nothing. So you know let me go ahead and actually pack it down into that pocket so you can. See how small it really gets so hopefully you know if you’re looking for something that packs down nice and small packs down into its own pocket which i know a lot of people love those kinds of things at least we’ll give you some information so hopefully it helps you make a decision moving forward so as you. Can see here it has that nice little pocket sitting right and inside it’s simply just a little flap with a velcro strap on there again just keeping. It nice and simple if you’re wearing the jacket you need to keep your phone dry or your phone warm this again is just a nice little storage space on the interior jacket there however its main. Intended purpose is to be the storage pocket for basically packing it down and traveling so let me go ahead and stuff it inside there for ya. So okay guys there you have it as you. Can see it packs down really nice and small it’s ridiculous you can see how. This just sits in the palm of my hands in fact just to give you an equivalence let me grab something here for ya this. Is my wallet okay nice and small trifle. Or bi fold wallet this is the freaking jacket, so we give you an idea of how. This small packs down it’s basically like the size of us it’s a half the size of a softball essentially so super nice. And lightweight just absolutely fantastic so you can see what i mean about how you pack this down inside a suitcase or something just take some little to note room just absolutely fantastic on their part super impressive. And it only takes a few seconds for you to essentially stuff it in there again. Just extremely impressed with the product last week backpacking you know obviously. I had a head to toe rain gear certainly. In cold conditions you know finding the. Proper rain gear is definitely essential during cold weather and i was just i was. Blown away by the performance of the product it not only kept me completely dry of course but it provided a little. Bit of breath ability even without the pit zips and some of the events and things like that if you see on other jackets just because of how thin it is as well as well as some of the portals around the neck the wrists and the hip area does allow for some air to. Come on in to make sure you keep nice and dry and to prevent condensation from. Building up on the interior of the jacket so again for something so six. Point four ounces still gives you the. Tape zippers that you would be hoping for the elastic around the waist that. You would hope for and most importantly the hood of the brim on the front. And then elastic in the back which i think is essential for a very high quality performing rain jacket so. You know i hope you enjoyed this i hope. I hope this gives you guys some information to aid you and assist you with looking for your own rain jacket and if it’s the product that you already had your eye on i hope you gave you some information and i provided you with my own opinion well enough to convince you to get the product it was it’s absolutely something i would recommend if you’re a little bit. Don’t wear them all the time, but they’re. Always in my backpack if i can decrease some nice weight here it just makes a. Huge difference moving forward especially in the long term the fact that i do plan on through hiking the appalachian trail i know that i got myself covered regardless of what the weather’s going to be so this retails. For 159 down at your local rei. Obviously comes in a variety of different sizes different colors and everything as well i would definitely recommend stopping it in with it’s your local rei or different uh different outfitters stop on in take a look at the. Product itself try it on see how it’s. Going to work for you know the price is really not that out of range i think it’s a great price for the quality of the product certainly there’s. Some other options out there however for the weight for the. Performance and the price point i definitely think this is a great. Hey guys bigfoot here today I’m going to be reviewing the rain jacket that i brought with me during my appalachian trail through hiked the men’s outdoor research helium to rain jacket. All right well this is the outdoor. Research men’s helium to rain jacket so. This is made of pertex shield 2.5 liter. Tiptop nylon which means this is going. To be ultra light my large rain jacket. Came in at 6.7 ounces what the manufacturer claims is six point five. Ounces it’s probably for like a medium but it’s also claimed to be waterproof. And then breathable we’ll get back to. That just a moment some of the other features on this it’s got a draw cord on the very. Bottom to be able to really fit whatever. Your waist size is for me as a large i. Had a waste of about thirty-six my start of the 18th and i never really adjust. The draw cord but as i lost weight i did so that was a nice little addition now the cops also have elastic inside of. Then which is able to really keep the. Water elements out all the seams are. Taped and sealed just to make it more waterproof now the hood has a brim on it. Which is nice because it will help keep the rain out of your face and then the back of the hood has a just about draw. Cord as well and i really typically use. This for number-one downpours when i. Wanted this tight against my head in the number two when it was just really windy and cold and i was using this for a windshield and i wanted to. Just keep my upper body my head warm now also research claims that the helium two is a standard fit i would agree with. That i had no issues with comfort ability with putting this one also was able to. Layer if i needed to below my rain jacket and a last feature that i really like about my helium 2 jackets here is the ability to be able to stuff your entire rain jacket right here in the inner pocket so this inner pocket. Served not just as a pocket inside your. Rain jacket but to stuff your entire jacket and compress to about the size of the first this is the size that it can. Press it down to here’s the size of my fist so it’s a little bit bigger than my size of my fist does have a little loop here that you’re going to tax it to whatever you would like but most of time i kept it just in this stack just like this and kept it on the outside of my pack in my mesh pocket now on the appalachian trail last year i actually use my helium to. More as a windshield than a rain shield. And i probably say it outnumbered about three to one part of that really is due to how dry of the season that we had on the trail last year but what i would typically do is when i was chilly instead of putting on my patagonia cap. For hoodie and purse parade to my. Capilene shirt here and get my hoodie. All wet after you know a couple miles of hiking i would throw this sucker on because obviously doesn’t matter if it. Gets wet i / sprayed through my shirt but really helped as a windshield and get my body temperature back up so on a. Normal day i would sometimes pull this. Out maybe a couple different times depending on what time of the year it was especially in the northern part going through the white mountains when you hit some of those high peaks of elevation and the temperatures start to get a little chilly now from a waterproof and breath ability standpoint i felt that the waterproof on this was fair there were times that in the. Torrential downpours or just some hard rain that lasted long periods of time i did have rain that came through this but. More of the breath ability side i felt. That it was more on the poor side from a breath ability standpoint typically i wasn’t wet from the rain i was wet from the perspiration from just sweating so much trapping my body heat and if rain. Did get through i probably didn’t notice just because i was so soaked with sweat so overall if you’re looking for a jacket that is highly breathable this is probably not your jacket it doesn’t have the pit zips that you do see in the more expensive jackets out there but from a. Waterproof standpoint of value and. Weight this jacket does a fair job and. This is probably one of the more popular jackets you actually will see out there on the appalachian trail now in the same. Breath that i say that i will say that this is a piece of gear that you probably can save a lot of money in going with like a frog togs that isn’t. The most fashionable rain gear out there on the trail but is lightweight saves. You a ton of money because you can get them for under 20 bucks on amazon at Walmart so you can save that. And put it towards a higher quality tent pack or sleeping bag but if you do have. Some money to spend you’re looking for a alter light lane jacket in the late. Spring to summer months this does a pretty fair job and I’m happy with my purchase the only other complaint that i have on this jacket is my zipper. Actually broke at the very end of my hike and it actually wasn’t the. Zipper side it was the male side that. You insert inside the zipper the. Little piece here fell off i don’t know. If you can see that very well looks like a little piece of plastic and because of that I’m not able to insert and be able.
