The Crossfire HD binoculars bring HD optics, rugged performance and high end form-factor. Add in the included GlassPak binocular harness for quick optic deployment in the field and superior protection and comfort – The Crossfire HD truly is a rare find.
Hello folks vortex just released a new version of the cross ocular and they now carry the HD designation. I have experienced with the previous Crossfire’s and they decided to compare them to the new HD version and see how much has changed. These are still vortexes, cheapest, roof, prism, binoculars and the retail pricing didn’t increase as far as I can see beyond the fact that the originals are now on sale at some places with the New Cross Fire, HD and diamondback HD vortex now labels the majority of their binoculars as HD.
They call everything from 130 to $1000, binoculars HD and at that point, I can’t help but feel like calling any of them. Hd is losing meaning beyond marketing speak. It feels like pure buzzword marketing to me, particularly since the newly released razors are now called Ultra HD and, unlike being tied to a particular pixel count, it’s hard to say what specific criteria an optical design has to meet in order to be called HD or if there even is a specific criteria beyond better than something else or better than the previous version.
Since vortex, don’t quantify what specifically constitutes HD I think they’ve watered down the term a bit and stripped it of some of the weight it once carried, but many rant on the HD label aside, any improvement that doesn’t carry a price increase is welcome and I wanted to see for myself what, if any, improvements have been made. For starters, the Crossfire’s now come with the glass pack case and binocular harness and they come with a nicer padded strap.
So if nothing else, they are a better value than the previous version based on the included accessories. The objective caps and the one-piece ocular cover are the same as the non HD version, and that’s fine as I have no complaints about them. The overall build is essentially identical to the previous version. The twist up eye cups are the same. No click stop positions but they’re smooth and they work fine.
The focus knob is not as consistent on my particular crossfire HD, as the one of my older Crossfire’s I think it’s most likely due to sample variation rather than a design change in the HDS, but either way the focus knob. On the newer pair is a little bit stiffer to turn, which isn’t an issue on its own, but there’s a small amount of movement when reversing direction that has almost zero resist, since this makes achieving perfect focus a bit more fiddly on the HDS than on my older pair.
It isn’t a big deal, but it was noticeable when comparing the two, the diopter adjustment doesn’t lock, but it’s fairly stiff without being difficult to turn and I. Imagine they could get bumped out of adjustment, but it’s not likely to happen too easily note that both of these are adjusted for me and the adjustment points are in different places. So while the marks can be used to return to a specific setting, if moved, I couldn’t use the marks to match the settings on the old pair to the new ones, initially, I did set the diopter on the new HDS at the same position that they are on the old one and it wasn’t right.
I took some time to adjust it for my eyes, and this is where I ended up. If I didn’t look at the slightly different labeling, when I was picking them up, I couldn’t tell the difference in my hands. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do a blind test between the two, because the extra play– and the focus knob of the HDS did give it away as soon as I started, focusing as for optics I have a strong feeling. The optical design is virtually unchanged.
My guess is that only the lens coatings are different. That’s only a guess, but either way the optics of the new crossfire HDS have far more in common with the old model than they have differences. My relief is unchanged from the previous version and it’s more than adequate for me as a glasses wear, but they do have a finicky nature about eye placement. I often found myself fidgeting with the binoculars, moving them side-to-side or tilting them slightly to get the largest, clearest and brightest view possible.
It’s not a big deal, but they are less forgiving than many other binoculars I’ve used and the old Crossfire’s and the new HD version are identical in this regard. The close focus distance is also identical in both versions. Right around 7 feet, not the closest, focusing binoculars out there, but not bad. The lens coatings do appear different on the HD version, they’re a slightly deeper blue-green, color, so I’m, confident the coatings are different.
The new coatings seem to provide a bit better light transmission, particularly the yellows, which stand out a bit more than in the previous version. This makes the overall view just a tiny bit brighter and warmer. The differences are subtle, though, and both are bright and give good color. The crosswire HDS have some distortion, it’s not terrible, but it can sometimes be noticeable, particularly when panning.
If there are straight lines in the view or I should say lines that should be straight distortion is exactly the same as what I see in the previous version. Chromatic aberration is very dependent on I position in terms of how much color fringing stands out because of that color fringing varies in both pairs. Depending on how precisely I position my eyes, the HD version certainly doesn’t have more than the old version and I initially thought it had slightly less.
In the end, I’d say they have similar levels of color fringing both are okay, it’s never terrible and sometimes a little fidgeting with eye placement can make it mostly disappear. Crossfire HDS are very sharp and clear views are very detailed with great resolution and contrast, sharpness fall-off towards the edge of the view is fairly low and it never stood out or bothered me overall, an excellent, sharp HD view and compared to the old version, I was basically identical.
I couldn’t see any improvement in sharpness resolution or overall clarity. It’s not really too surprising, as the old Crossfire’s were already pretty good and the price didn’t increase. But if you’re wondering how much extra clarity you get to go along with the HD designation, I couldn’t really see any after multiple days of back-and-forth comparisons. Ultimately, I think the HD label is more marketing than anything, but the new coatings do seem to make a difference.
Even if it’s a small one and the better included accessories, are nice as well. I think it’s a fine evolution of the crossfire, especially since they retail for the same price. As the previous version I think, vortex is getting a little carried away with putting HD on everything, but these are still good binoculars. There’s a lot to like here and it’s a pretty compelling package for the price, though, if you already have the previous version of the Crossfire’s, it’s probably not worth upgrading to the HD version.
So that’s my thoughts on the new vortex, crossfire HD. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments, as always. Thank you for watching. Take care.
All right, let’s take a look and see how awful these binoculars truly are of binoculars that are worth more than a hundred dollars. You will probably be impressed by these otherwise stay. The heck away. Subscribing to the channel, allows me to continue to make these videos for you and sometimes you’re, going to see what you love and you want to get it sometimes you’re going to want to stay the heck away, because some things are not meant to be purchased.
They really have a lot of movement in their image. Look at that. Oh squeeziness, lots of purpling at that distant tree line. Look at that and we are under ideal observing conditions here. Look at this muddy sort of purpling on the horizon, and it’s not even sharp. It’s not even sharp out to the edges. Now: okay, fine! There are some things that are nice about the crossfire one you can afford it, uh, that’s that’s! That’s a good thing right! Binoculars these days are are just overpriced.
Generally speaking, if this is a 150 or 200 us dollar pair of binoculars. In reality, it’s more like a 90 us dollar pair of binoculars color rendition is just yuck. I mean look at look at the greens and the yellows that should be more beautiful than that. The greens are almost puke green. Look at the trees here, there’s a lot of sort of false color, but it’s done poorly.
You have a lot of sort of weird pastels creeping into this image when really it should be gold. Build quality is yuck press too hard on these uh on these eye cups and they start to slide down. There’s not really any clear retention or levels where they stop. They don’t really even go back far enough. They don’t even whatever I hate these uh. These are like cheap hunting, binoculars and that’s about it.
They are overweight. We have uh questionable specifications uh, you can read what vortex says they have, and then you can see for yourself that it’s like looking through a cheap coin, operated telescope like what you would find at some. U s national park and you have to pump quarters into it so that it keeps operating. So you can look through the muddy image if you move your head behind these exit pupils- and you are looking through, say the underbrush.
Oh, it just makes you woozy. Look at that. Yeah! Don’t use these for birding they’re, not very good in terms of focus depth. Uh. You have a lot of issues with focusing in and out they’re, not perfectly aligned, and, of course, you wouldn’t expect that at this price point they’re, not that sharp they’re, not that beautiful, to look through there’s no sparkle whatsoever in this image.
It’s all cheap chinese glass believe what you will about the vortex marketing about you know: hd high tech, blah blah whatever like these lenses. These coatings are a substandard. I wish that vortex would be just a little bit humble in its advertising. Crossfire hd, hd optical system, optimized, glass elements deliver exceptional resolution designed to withstand the highest levels of impact.
Like me, throwing these out of my window and then stomping on them eye relief. Let’s take a look at that. Let’s see, can I even yeah it’s pretty close. It is pretty close. I think that 15 millimeters uh might be accurate. It’s hard to measure eye relief, because you can’t really put the tape measure up to your eyeball, but I would say that these might even be 13 millimeters they’re.
Pretty close, I can feel my eyelashes and I have long beautiful girly like eyelashes, but I do feel them almost batting the uh the glass, and that could be a problem if you have long eyelashes or any eyelashes at all, because if you’re sweating after hiking looking for a deer or something- and you stick your eyes up- you will smear sweat all over the lens. The sun is going down we’re having a little bit of lower light.
God there’s nothing special about this image. I mean it’s functional, that’s about it. Let’s see distance viewing uh. There comes some veiling flare over everything. These binoculars are not that sharp, I’m fighting the stupid focus wheel, they’re, not that contrasty. The least thing that vortex could have done with this is create a very contrasty pair of binoculars for cheap.
Look at that chromatic aberration on the tree line there uh yeah, I’m not looking through these binoculars. This is just a test to see what glare and flare look like. Oh flare, is there flare in the bottom of that image? Look at that! Yes, some hourglassing! Okay, let’s talk about focus depth, I’m focusing as a big mushy focus wheel. It just feels like a truck tire and it has a lot of sort of mushy play to it.
It doesn’t snap into focus very well it’s hard to describe this, because I can’t give you a binocular vision with just one phone lens on my iphone, but it does feel like my sight, is constrained as I look through these optics. It feels like I’m looking through just sort of like a pinhole camera. I would say, spend the extra 50 us dollars and get the diamondback hd you’d be happier with that.
Vortex is really working hard to mine the lower levels of this optics market with the crossfire hd. They already have the diamondback. So why make something slightly cheaper? That’s that’s worse! Wait! Wait! Look at that blue heron focus wheel is terrible. Ugh, you can see some muddiness on the sides of this image too. The falloff is quite steep, but it reaches far into the center of the image.
I’m doing my best to give you a sharp image here, I feel like the focus field is uneven, and it’s not that sharp. You really don’t get a exceptionally sharp image. Please please, if you haven’t seen better binoculars, but you only have used these in the past. Try something else as well to see if you like it, because this this is really really entry level vortex does do a decent job with its ergonomics and its design, and anything that you touch on these bins is is is decent, but these are decidedly low level in quality.
Everything feels very plasticky to me. It feels just like slapped together made in china. It’s got this standard, vortex caps right on the front and back it’s got that that really cheap, like almost pvc piping kind of feel to it. This is not even a high quality body in terms of the plastic or the grips I mean these. These grips are very, very smooth. I could definitely drop these easily and I might want to because I hate these binoculars with the diamondback hd in the running as a competitor to these I would say, get the diamondback hd.
Why bother with something that’s slightly cheaper? That is like 30 percent, less good and people if you’re buying binoculars budget for a little bit more than what you expect to pay? Okay, because you’re really not going to get a lot of value for your money at this level of the crossfire hd or even the prostaff 3s from nikon. You want to add a few hundred us dollars more to your budget and you’ll, be happier believe me, and then you won’t have to upgrade these in ten years or five years or next week enough with these binocs don’t get them.
Okay, I’m freezing my butt off out of here. I’m gonna go home, make sure you subscribe to the channel this way. I can afford to continue to give you optics reviews unadorned honest optic reviews so yeah, let’s see what else? What other cheap binoculars can I burn to the ground next, just like the rest of northern california. Right, we go through a burning season on optics exotica we’re in the middle of it right now.
I’ll see you guys later take care of all my friends all over the world signing out.
Hey everybody, this PJ Riley from Lancaster archery got a product video for you. Today. We wanted to tell you about the vortex crossfire ten by forty two binoculars great binoculars from vortex. First thing: you’re gonna notice is it comes in this nice carrying case here. This case actually doubles as a harness pouch. So with this harness here attached to it, it’s you’re, gonna, wear it and it’s gonna sit right here.
So if you’re out hunting or shooting you know, you can just gonna, be able to pull up and off those right out. So that’s a great added feature here: the harness system, but the binoculars themselves, as we said ten by forty two, so that means they’re ten power, magnification x’. Forty two refers to the objective lens, which is going to be 42 millimeter.
So these are going to be high, magnification, good light gathering qualities with that 42 millimeter and the crossfire binoculars. They have all the great features that vortex builds into their binoculars. There are nitrogen purged and oring sealed, which means they’re fog, proof and waterproof they’re HD glass they’ve got in here, which maximizes resolution and contrast.
So your image is always gonna be crisp and clear, but it’s got a rubberized coating here, which is really nice. It’s good for getting a nice grip and also, if you drop these you’re, not going to ding them up that rubberized coating is like an armor. It’s going to protect them there, so we’ve got twist up Ike up so right now. The way the eye cups are would be for somebody like me wearing glasses, if you’re not wearing glasses, you can just twist up each side.
Now you can put this right against your face. You’re gonna have on the right side. This is gonna, be your focal adjustment to adjust it to your eyes. You’re gonna get the binoculars adjusted to where you want look through just with your right eye and dial it in with this little wheel here and then once this is locked into place, and you have it adjusted to your eye, then, when you use the overall focal wheel, you’ll have a crisp picture so that it’s seeing you have a nice crisp picture with both of your eyes.
Looking through there, that’s always a great feature as well. Each pair is going to have these tethered objective covers they’re gonna be attached on there, so you don’t have to worry about, losing them gets rainy or something you just close them up like that. You’re gonna have a removable rain cover for the eyepieces, sits on there. Nice like that, in addition to the harness system, you’re also going to get a neck, strap that’s going to connect right here.
So if you just want to wear them around your neck, if you’re out shooting target archery or something you don’t want to deal with the whole harness system, you have the neck, strap there. That’s nice and comfortable neoprene adjustable. It’s gonna fit you real! Well, these are shockproof. So if you drop them, you don’t have to worry about the lenses getting messed up on the inside they’re they’re gonna stay in place, so just a high-quality pair of binoculars from vortex.
That’s the crossfire 10 by 42. If you liked this video give us a thumbs up, if you want to see more videos like it subscribe to our YouTube channel, don’t forget to click that bell. So you get notifications whenever we put out new videos and as always, if you have any questions you can visit us at Lancaster, archery comm.
What’s up everybody and welcome back to my channel today, I’m continuing my series on what I keep in my backpack when packing the back country, while boning today is I’m, going to tell you about one of the most important things in your bow: hunting arsenal and that’s optics. More specifically, these are the Vortech crossfire 8 by 42 binoculars. If you’re not familiar with the numbers on by nose, the eight is, if you’re looking at something out in the distance. This is gonna, make it eight times closer.
That’s what the egg refers to. The 42 refers to the size millimeter lens down here on the begin. I’m a family 8 by 40 twos versus the other ones just seems for bowhunting that this is like the best overall general binocular fir for all uses. I did used to use the 10 by 40 twos, but I can tell the difference with these and the ones I was using that the tens being that much closer with just a little shake here and a lot of times when you’re bowling, you have bow in one hand and binoculars in the other and your one hand in it.
So I like the stability of these really really nice, they have a rubberized outside, so you can always have a good, firm grip on them. That’s a nice strap that comes along with it. The eye cups on the end protect the lenses that are multi coated and it’s a roof prism setup so makes them more compact and still get good light and good power. They have caps on this, and also that are really nice that they have I I release here that they’re adjustable eye cups. So if you wear glasses, you can adjust these and and still get good vision through them.
They have adjustable diopter right here for your eyes that fear. So your eye dominance. You can adjust this and it helps if you have one eye stronger than the other one, or vice versa. That helps balance that out when focusing and then, of course, your focus wheel up here, super smooth yeah adjusts both barrels to get you in focus super good, good, good, glass, I can’t say enough about the glass, and these is really really nice. Let a lot of light in I messed around the other day, and them both out my old lens starting to get dusk out, couldn’t really see through them.
Of course, they have a smaller millimeter down here. On the end, these really let the light in they are nitrogen gas purged and that keeps some fog proof. They’ve got nitrogen gas that they pump in here that that keeps some fog proof and it works good. You know that’s important in those early mornings, when you’re sitting out Glasson your breaths coming out the fog and it’s you’re not constantly wiping them out or trying to hold back and forth and try to see what you’re looking through that kept them.
Nice and clear crystal clear they also have vortex, has a it’s called, a VIP warranty, which stands for very important promise and that states that if they can’t fix these, if something happens to them, don’t replace them and they stand behind that warranty. I have not used it yet thank God, but from what the reviews I’ve seen, they stand behind their product, really well good customer service, good american-made product, something else I liked about these. Is they have a adapter that you can get so if you want to sit them on a tripod, a lot of people that hung out west you’re spending a lot of your day, Glasson and comfort level is important.
So a lot of people get a tripod, do some on a tripod and and view all day long through these things, and that makes it a lot better for people so I like them. It’s good overall I do a lot of whitetail hunting I like to keep these with me, they’re they’re comfortable, and they stay out of the way fairly. Well, when they’re, they do make a case that it wears on your chest. That vortex makes the holds these super nice high quality, I love them they’re, great I’d, highly recommend them to anybody looking for optics and that’s what I keep in my packs.
So that’s my review on these and stay tuned and don’t forget to Like and subscribe down below and keep the videos coming leave comments. Let me do what I could do better or maybe some products that you want to see and again thanks very much god bless.

It is a little but a great tool if, but was blown out by its performance and quality very handy doesn’t feel cheap, enhance, focusing is precise and has very clear. Opticals comes with a nice cover having belt loop and a neck strap uploaded some pictures of the trees in my backyard just for comparison purpose. All pictures are taken with an iPhone first picture taken at normal, zoom, 2nd and 4th are at 10x magnification, whereas third and fifth are through this Andriy binoculars.
I am sure you can’t go wrong with it ESP when it is so inexpensive and does its job so effectively. My kids love it too. This is very useful to watch birds and wildlife. The body is small enough to fit in one hand and very good, build I could see very clearly for this vernaculars. It works very well within 1, 000 yard distance view I bring this whenever I go out to shoot wildlife pictures, compact, lightweight and seemingly well constructed.
Obviously, there is a trade-off between the field of vision and magnification versus portability, but these binoculars are well suited for hiking and general sightseeing purchased and used for a just completed road trip through the. U s, Southwest found them very easy to carry and a good way to get up close and personal with sights in Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, Monument, Valley and other locations in between click link.

This will be a great upgrade to some high power binoculars! Also great binoculars for kids!
COMFORTABLE VIEW
When using binoculars for bird watching or binoculars for hunting there can be a lot of time spent pressed against your binos. One reason we added the twistable eye cup which creates space between your eye and the lens. For additional eye comfort the eyepiece lens is coated with a multilayer antireflection blue file to help present a clear image with a open and bright eye shot. For added clarity the right eyesight also includes a diopter to compensate eye strength
EXTERIOR ARMOR
Walking through the woods deer hunting or hiking with travel binoculars can create ample opportunity for binoculars to get scratched, dropped, or weathered. We added a protective outer coating which provides a slip-resistant grip when handling in cold or wet weather.
