So I’m going on a section hike through the Appalachian Trail next month paint up. Some new gear and kind of looking at. Some new features they’re putting on. Some stuff I thought. This would be kind of worth a review at least. Ipicked out as probably. Most commonly the Black Diamond trail back trekking poles. It is a aluminum three-piece design. Ithink for this dimension. What does it say 63 to 140 centimeters. These come in at 562 grams. Or 198 ounces they’re kind of the budget black diamond poles but. Ireally got this for durability use. Ididn’t want to get financially too invested in. Some carbon poles I might break as I’m gonna be using these for my shelter but the interesting thing about. This as I’m sure a lot of. You know black diamonds use. This flick lock design a lot easier. And way better that screw. And style overlap that you’ll get in a lot of. More entry-level pools. This is kind of nice and a much easier way to adjust the height. If you’re especially using it on a hike. That you’re gonna be using for your shelter. Ithink that’s just the way better design to go with but kind of. One of the reasons I picked. It the other interesting thing is the at least doing some price comparison on the top it’s a rubber handle they’ve got a fully adjustable strap. And it’s its actually webbed in here it’s not just a nylon hand extension strap. II thought was kind of nice it’s a sea at. This price point it’s kind of nice to see. That it’s fully it’s fully padded the other interesting thing too was.
It does have this grip extension. That runs down the bottom of the handle grip itself. This is a kind of cool part. It I’m pretty sure this is an Levee a style foam which is. What poly ethylene vinyl acetate but it’s a pretty high quality foam it’s not. Something you’d find on. Something that’s very inexpensive the manufacturer very durable pliable under temperature. That fluctuates from being very cold it’s uh it’s pretty hydrophobic you’ll see. This kind of stuff on like gym floors. And martial arts studios stuff like. That they’ll this padding on there. Because it’s resistant to chemicals oil. That kind of thing so it’s nice to see that’s. All they’ll add they added. This onto it at least as an extension grip but the poles like itself come with a kind of performance basket here.
And that’s what they call. It does have a flex tip. This is not the carbide tip it’s of course removable but. It does kind of have a nice concave point to. It’s gonna be good enough for what I’m gonna be using it for but at least a at least nice to know. You can upgrade you’re looking for something a little bit different. If these get worn out. You can go to the carbide tip so. Icould get to get some good use out of these I’m excited to use them on the trail haven’t had much experience with the black diamond poles but. Some interesting features.

How about a review of the Black Diamond trail flick lock polls. You like polls are not don’t matter. Iguess there’re pros. And cons to taking them. Or leaving them home. Either way the Black Diamond trail is a pretty decent little poll. And I’ll show you why this poll features the comes with the powder basket as well as the little trail baskets like. You buy the black diamonds. That are less expensive. Though a lot of them will just come like. This with the little trail basket just. Something to be aware of these have the carbide tip it’s round. It tends to get a really good bite in the ice. These quite a bit one of the things. One of the reasons to pick the Black Diamond was. They had the flick locks the flick locks are really nice and. They tend to hold really well they’re easy to adjust but. They still they won’t. They won’t slide until. You get a huge amount of pressure on them. If they do a lot of times. What will happen is. They need a bit of adjustment there’s a Phillips head screw here. You can increase the tension just slightly but after a couple of minutes you’ll get. It figured out exactly. What you need these particular polls are a three-piece. You take them all the way down you’re going to get. This big just so you’re aware I’ll get the measurement in an annotation. This particular poll set the Black Diamond trail has a couple of things it’s got a nice wide wrist strap here I’ll show. You the thing I like about. This wrist strap is basically but. Idon’t like having something real heavy wrapped around my wrist. Ilike being able to get into.
And out of it pretty easy. This wrist strap because it’s nice and wide lets. You actually push on these. And get quite a bit of power into them without having a real heavy grip on the pole. You can use just your hands you’ll see let’s see. You can see this in the video. You can see these do have a little bit of flex to them. These aren’t going to be as sturdy as say as a one-piece cross-country ski pole. These don’t have the. This tool, and so they’re not going to be quite so rigid nevertheless they’re strong enough for most of what you need as far as a trekking pole. Or maybe a ski pole depending on how you’re skiing what you’re doing anyway the other thing the back. That the trail model features is.
This neoprene grip right here. One of the things this is really nice for is just. You change from a downhill to an uphill. You change your speed sometimes it’s nice to have a little bit different length to pull. This right (here) than happen to stop. And change your poles readjust settings on the pole. This lets you just choke down on the pole a little farther. And so especially for some of the up. And down a little bit of hilly cross-country type stuff. This is real nice these poles like. This would go for this as well as. Any of the other four adjustable poles. You keep a set like. This they’re on I don’t know. Imentioned there are pound 4 ounces. Or just shy and 3/4 ounces on my scale. This isn’t much weight just to have around. You can throw it on your pack. You can throw it in the trunk so.
If you’re going for say a cross-country ski. This is a real nice set of poles so. You can just have basically a loner pair ok. Somebody else forgets there’s. This can keep them going without ruining their trip. If you’ve got somebody that’s smaller statured doesn’t matter. You can still adjust. It for them the flick locks so far have done really well in the cold. Ihaven’t really used them in wet. And mud, but they tended to hold their adjustment really well that’s about. If you’re looking for a set of poles the Black Diamond trail seems to be a real nice model that’s the basic things. Ilike about I really have no major complaints as far as. They go there’re lighter poles but you’re you’re going to be sacrificing a little bit in the way of the wall thickness of the aluminum.

And just apologize to my subscribers had kind of snafu with Adsense. And YouTube got all worked out. And so we were able to get. Some things up and running again but. Iwanted to take some time to talk a little bit about trekking poles share with. You a little bit of my experience in regarding trekking poles. And then also talk about. Ireally like and why I think that’s its a really important piece of gear. You need to really consider. You know what you’re willing to investment first of. You know I started a couple years ago. Ibought I was probably three. Or four years ago I bought my first set of trekking poles really. Iwas doing a lot of kayaking and. You know there was some use form in their well then. Ifound out I was starting to do a little bit. More hiking and backpacking and camping and. That sort of thing well I’m a friend of mine. And myself last winter. We went out we went on a winter time camp. And weather was slated to be 20 degrees we’re ready for it good. Igot camp set up everything and then.
You know where we’re at Michigan weather’s pretty unpredictable. We kind of made a rookie error of going with. What the met weatherman said. We actually we prepared for 20 degrees but. We had a blizzard come in. It came with windchill. It got down to negative 20 so. We found ourselves in kind of predicament. We had to bug out probably around. One o’clock we had to kind of hike out of where. We were at and get back to our car. You know just cheapy trekking poles. Ibought from Walmart. They were like nine dollars a piece. Something like I found out. You know the kind of the hard way. You know good lighting on. That trip you know it’s good to have good reliable lighting especially get the bug out at night. And it’s also good to have good reliable trekking poles the. Iwas using at the time again they’re just. Some Walmart you know cheapy ones. They were okay they did okay in. All honesty I’m not a big fan of Walmart gear but in a pinch.
You know it really helped. And so after I kind of got on a kick. Iwas really looking for a decent set of trekking poles. Some trips coming up. Iended up going to gain amount. Iended up purchasing this trekking pole here. Isaid of these this is a Swiss skier trekking pole it’s the kind. You know you kind of unscrew. It to push you know to push. And up has an anti-shock mechanism. You can see that in there. You know I picked these up. They were $40 for the pair of them. One of the things you know. Iwas really attracted to is the kind of the cork like handles. You know I’ve seen those in a lot of trekking poles heard a lot of good things about those. II purchased I bought. That was one of the reasons. Ibought it the other thing. Either reason I bought. Ihad a kind of hidden compartment up here. Where there was an LED light. You can see I thought wow that’s cool. Ibetter buy they didn’t come with.
Any instructions anything got home had to try to figure out. How to put the batteries in. That took a while yeah find out. That the handles were kind of jacked up. Ilearned the hard way to do your research. Igot online and looked up. Some reviews. These things just horrible reviews as. That handle just kind of came right out. That happened probably the week after. Ibought them and they’re not supposed to do. You can see little dimples in here. Where they’re supposed to lock into the handle wasn’t happy about. That with the light. It didn’t again it didn’t come with. Any instructions but. Idid find out that in order to change the light bulb there’s a little there’s a little tab back here. You got to pull out. And then pull this out. And then you can pull. This put the cap to the battery compartment. And then you can put your batteries in so. That out the heart of.
You know so in all honesty. Iwas a little disappointed. It comes with any instructions. Ithought you just took the handle off. It was it’s what happened with. It but anyways after. Ibought them I ended up going on a trip to a week-long trip in Allegheny National Forest. And learned the hard way. You know they did not stand up to two a week in the Allegheny Mountains. You can see the little the guards. That protect the sleeves just kind of broke off their still there, but they’re not. You know they’re not stuck there. Where they’re supposed to be. You know these screw mechanisms in order to raise. And lower the pole in order to write. These screw mechanism in order to raise the lower the pole. They failed on I could get him out but. Icouldn’t get back in. Ican get a min but. Icouldn’t get back out. You know in all kinds of things. II really kind of had my share of these.
And just sort of got. He really had really got fed up with. And kind of learned the hard way. You know that trekking poles are. Something you want to. You want to really think about. You purchase you want to really invest in. Icame back another trip going to Allegheny. Another guy trip going to Allegheny coming up. Iended up purchasing a set of these are the Black Diamond trail black flick lock trekking poles. Now I’ll tell you why I really love. And why I really like to use them first of. All size you can notice. This Swiss the Swiss gear pole is probably pretty standard size in terms of in terms of. You know size of trekking poles. Ilike the fact that it’s shorter okay like the fact. It compacts that does mean you’re not gonna get.
Is tall but it doesn’t get as tall it’s tall enough plenty tall enough for what I’m gonna do with them. It has a flick lock system instead of a screw system which. You know you saw the spring mechanism inside of here okay. It still has a similar spring mechanism but it’s not it’s not operated with the screw instead it’s operated with a little lever there. And then you could pull. It out has measurements on the side in order. You know most trekking poles have. This but it has measurements on the side. You want to set a measurement. And find something that’s comfortable. And lock it into place again. You could do that for. Both sides actually. You know they’re really durable really durable. Iwent pole shopping what I would do is. You know you sort of take the pole part. It up to where you’d like to have. It in terms of its height. And then I sort of give it a job test.
You know it in the ground. Ikind of push on it a little bit to see does. You know when it’s locked in place does. It gives easily enough. It gives too easy let’s say. You have this locked in place. You know it shouldn’t. It shouldn’t want to give very easily at least. What I found was a lot of companies. Although some nice features about the poles themselves. It came to that time to push him in the ground just. You know they went attempt key time to put weight on. They went right in and kind of closed up on. You with the black diamonds. Iwas very impressed again. These are the Black Diamond trail black flick locks. Ilove using these you know there’s so. Many things you can do with a trekking pole on the woods not only just to. You know get some weight transfer. Some weight into your arms. And said your back but being a tent.
You know being a hammock camper with a tarp camper. You know rigging up tarps of these is real easy. It came with some snow. Some snow boot two things there — the snow west. And so just a really great really great pull set. They came with these little red covers on them. This is the only thing I would say. It would be negative about. These things so far. They came with these little tip covers. Itook them out I didn’t want to use the carbide tip in the. You know I was gonna be doing so. Iwas gonna have I just sort of fell off but anyways I’d love to hear. What you think you know in terms of your experience with trekking poles again. You know mine was my experience kind of lent to. That trekking poles are. Something you really should do your research on. You know invest what you can in. These are around fifty dollars in fact.
You want to purchase. These I’ll put a link in the description to. Igot them and so. You could do that but really the black diamonds were really good Swiss skier. Iwould stay away from. Iwent back again shopping for a second set. Even looked at Wendell’s but was just not happy with the quality especially for the price compared to. My new Black Diamond trail ergo cork trekking poles hey. Everybody its marked a lost traveler. And we’re ready to travel. Everybody this is going to be a quick overview of the Black Diamond trail ergo cork trekking poles. They come in this box right here. You open everything up to get. These instructions on the do’s. And the don’ts of the poles. What I like about these poles prepare 512 grams. Or 1 pound and 2 ounces the extended link is 69 to 140 centimeters. Or 27 inches to 55 inches. You collapse these down they’ll go to 69 inches on the ends there as. You can see there’s a 38 millimeter trekking basket. And to take these off. You just pull down and unscrew counterclockwise. That way you can put different baskets on their just a depending on the season. And the terrain that you’re gonna be in. And on the end these tips here. These will unscrew to so. You can replace those on the end of.

You think about having gloved hands.

You have got nice padded straps These are for your wrists There is adjust ability here so. You can kind of dial in. That fit to you find it. Most comfortable Over the course of long days on the trail. This certainly does take wear. And tear off of your wrists which can take a bit of abuse as. You are pounding the poles into the ground again. And again and again So really nice set of features there on the grips At the other end of the poles. You will find Black Diamond’s Flex Tech tips So. This entire section here at the bottom of the lowest shaft section The flex does indicate the fact. That there is a little bit of give here It helps to protect the actual shaft section So. You were to wedge these in such a fashion.
You could potentially be breaking the actual shaft section. This would instead sheer away which is good news. This is a replicable part sold separately but easily replaced Broken shaft section especially out in the back country could be a much bigger problem The very end here is the carbide portion of the Flex Tech tip So. It comes into con-tact with the ground If. You are on dirt packed trails. This is certainly what you would want coming into contact with the ground itself The tech naming in. This tip indicates that can actually be unscrewed entirely taken off. And replaced by a small custom fit rubber tip which would be preferable. You were using these on improved surfaces. Or primarily on rock You actually get better performance there That is sold separately but again.
You can purchase and have a. More permanent or semi permanent placement You an also separately buy tip protectors basically a cap. That goes over the entire tip end Also want to point out. This small diameter piece here It is a basket It is designed to keep the poles from sinking too deeply into the ground so. You get the leverage of the. Off of the poles you would expect If. You wanted to use these poles in snow deep powder things of. That nature Black Diamond does include broader diameter baskets here They screw right into place. You have got that much better performance on softer surfaces so a nice inclusion there. All right today we are going to be reviewing the Black Diamond Alpine carbon cork trekking pole. These a couple years ago. And I’ve used them successfully for several seasons. Now actually I think I’ve had them for four. Or five seasons and I’ve done about a dozen different mountain hunts with them there’s a lot of different tracking polls up their day. Everything under the Sun. You could think of for dream of but. That I’ve really come to like. These and I’ll go through a. Few of the features. Ireally like so the. One thing I really enjoy. What these is the wrist drops. They don’t come loose. We keep your hand in there. They work really well I’ve never had an issue with them. They get wet they dry out a credibly fast cork handle incredibly comfortable we’ve got like a rubber is kind of deal down here. You want to hold more let go yeah just kind of. More like a stick I guess versus having this contoured cork handle but the. One thing I do really like with. This cork handle as well. When it’s in extremely cold out. And below zero when you’re holding this with a thinner glove your hand doesn’t get cold. Some cheaper trekking poles will have like a plastic tape grip. That plastic will be ice-cold. You grab onto it shows your hand but. These are pretty good. They don’t freeze your hand on. You the other thing that’s really great with. This Black Diamond the pole in particular are the walking hubs here no. This might not seem like a big deal to have a clamp like.
That but compared to a twist lock the twist lock those tend not to lasas along. And also the twist lock. You put a ton of pressure on them sometimes they’ll fail. And slide out essentially wrecked. And I’ve had a lot of twist locks fail they’re usually cheaper. Than the cloud style like here but on these. If there’s ever an issue. You do is you tighten the clamp here. And push and it’s basically you’re good to go on your fixed where’s the twist lock style. That mechanism ever goes. Or breaks on your fails it’s the air hole holes basically wrecked no the. One thing that the best spool specifically there’s two clamps two sizes. What I do on this guy. It actually has that numbering on. How long your pole is so. Ikind of know what I’d like to have my poles preset up. You just adjust it to the measurement on there on. This guy you set them. Both to a 105 centimeters to. You clamp and it’s the same length every time.
Both poles are the same. You don’t have to pull them up. And measure them side by side it’s quick it’s easy. This is carbon fiber. It is incredibly light compared to a lot of the trekking poles. Ihad in Alaska actually commented on how shocked. He was at how well these poles held up. Because a lot of his clients would come up with cheaper poles. And they’d have their pole break during the trip. Or fail at the clamps. Whether it’s the twist lock er. This style I’m not sure but. He was incredibly impressed. How well he’s held up. Because those guys typically use an ice axe as a walking stick out there so kind of made. Me feel good he thought they’re good as well the other thing I really like to have. One my trekking poles as. These rubber tips you don’t have to buy the Black Diamond version. You can after market.
One but basically when you’re walking through the hiking through the mountains. When you’re up above treeline. These poles have like a little metal tip on them. And it’s constantly going tick tick tick of the rocks so. You want to have these keeps. You a lot quieter plus your poles don’t sink in to the mud sometimes. When you’re hiking if it’s soft. When it’s oil you don’t have. These tips on that narrow point drives pretty. That drives the pole pretty deep into the ground. It can just be like a drag to keep pulling it out steadies. Even on the main trails. Iactually prefer these rubber tips. All the time I never take them off it’s found.
One thing I found made. It walk way easier. You were going across the glacier ice like. They have up in Alaska in. Some places sheep on team. You might want to take them off just. You can dig into the ice but generally speaking if you’re just. If it’s dry out dirt there’s not a lot of ice. That you’re crossing these rubber tips, so they’ll definitely the way to go but overall. This wrap Nepal a 5 out of 5 spent grave never had a minute’s issue with them. You don’t have a setting treky set of trekking poles. You definitely need to get. If your backpack hunting it’ll make your life was easier the balance of your load helps balance your load. When you’re walking especially. If it’s on a incline. Or dropping down hills.
Or silently just makes. It so much easier whatever. You do just buy a good quality Brad don’t buy a cheap Brown just because of the price spend the money get a good pair.
The durable easy to use. And cost friendly Black Diamond Trail Trekking Poles are perfect for backpackers. Or hikers that are looking for a pole. That is going to do a lot. That is going to be very durable. And is not going to break the bank This is a three section telescoping trekking pole so. You have got three shaft sections here And. You have got two flick locks so. You can adjust the trekking poles Flick locks are re-ally easy to use They are external locks. You have to do is flick. It open with your thumb adjust the pole to the proper length. And flick it closed So really easy to use design really durable design there And. You also have durable aluminum construction So. These are recall durable for their weight Just taking a look at. All the features of the poles up here at the top. You have dual density foam grips And the thing I love about foam grips on trekking poles is in warmer weather. If your hands get sweaty. This recall wicks away the sweat And in colder temperatures. You can’t feel the cold through the foam grips They are also really easy to grip with gloves on So for all seasons foam grips are really great You have an extended grip here so. This is normally you would kind of grab the grip there but. All the way down here. You have got different points. You can grab on to the pole So. You are on uneven terrain. You are going up hill. And just need to kind of grab the pole at a different spot.
It is really easy to use there And as well. You have kind of flat top on. This grip So you could. Even palm the top of. Ican see that being pretty comfortable as well The strap here is a really nicely padded strap. And Black Diamond makes. It really easy to adjust So. You have to do is pull. That out adjusts it to the proper height. And just kind of cinch. That down that really takes pressure off of your wrists. You are hiking with poles It is a wider strap. Some other poles I have seen so. That really takes a lot of pressure off It is a really comfortable strap Going down to the tips. You have got Black Diamond’s flex tech tips And the great thing about. These tips is you were to get the trekking poles stuck between two rocks. Or in a position that might damage the trekking poles. These tips are meant to break first before the actual trekking pole This is a replaceable piece so. It is press fit onto the bottom You can after years of use.
You can replace the tips And. This also happens to have a little tech tip on the bottom So. You can choose to purchase. That other rubber tip separately. And trade them out They don’t come with the trekking poles but. That is a feature that can trade with. These poles You have a low profile basket. That is included with. These poles And you can take. This basket off and replace. It with a winter basket Black Diamond happens to include the winter baskets with. These poles So this tip is just threaded You can unscrew the smaller basket. And vice versa So these extra baskets add a lot of value to the poles. Imentioned this is a telescoping pole So the usable length. You have with these poles is 25 inches. All the way up to 55 inches You have a really wide range of adjust ability there And in centimeters. It is 63 centimeters.
All the way up to 140 centimeters So for people of different heights. You are just hiking on uneven terrain. You need to make minor adjustments those flick locks are really going to allow. You to make those adjustments really easily Again. This is the perfect pole for someone who is hiking or back packing looking for a cost effective pole but. That offers a lot of features. And is really easy to use The Black Diamond Trail trekking poles.
The Black Diamond First Strike Trekking Poles are youth oriented poles. That have all the great quality. And durable features. You would come to expect from Black Diamond but. They are really lightweight. And really easy to us for your little ones You have durable aluminum construction on the shafts of these trekking poles And. This is just a two section pole So. You only have one lock It makes. It really easy to use You have just got. One point of adjust ability here And. That is with Black Diamond FlickLocks So the same durable really easy to use locks. That are on the adult poles With the FlickLocks. You have to do is flick. It open with your thumb adjust the pole to your specific height. And then flick it back closed These poles have a wide range of adjust ability You have got at the low end 66 centimeters. All the way up to 110 centimeters In inches. That translates to 26 inches. All the way up to 43 inches So.
These trekking poles are definitely going to grow with your child as. They grow Up at the top. You have really durable rubber grips And. These are a lot narrower. Then the adult trekking poles So. It is not as sharp as the adult Black Diamond trekking poles So a really great safety feature there Moving up the tip. You have a basket a smaller basket on here And. This tip is threaded so. You can remove the basket. It actually does come with bigger baskets So. You can put those on It adds a lot of value to the trekking poles So for your winter activities. You can definitely trade them in for the other baskets When.
You are out on the trail with your child. These poles are going to give. You confidence they will stay stable. And safe on the trail especially. If they are carrying a heavy pack. You are on uneven terrain These are great poles for boy scouts. Or girl scouts who are going to be going out often. And since they are so adjustable. They are going to grow with your child so. You are going to get a lot of years out of these poles They are the Black Diamond First Strike.
So I’m going on a section hike through the Appalachian Trail next month paint up. Some new gear and kind of looking at. Some new features they’re putting on. Some stuff I thought. This would be kind of worth a review at least. Ipicked out as probably. Most commonly the Black Diamond trail back trekking poles. It is a aluminum three-piece design. Ithink for this dimension. What does it say 63 to 140 centimeters. These come in at 562 grams. Or 198 ounces they’re kind of the budget black diamond poles but. Ireally got this for durability use. Ididn’t want to get financially too invested in. Some carbon poles I might break as I’m gonna be using these for my shelter but the interesting thing about. This as I’m sure a lot of. You know black diamonds use. This flick lock design a lot easier. And way better that screw. And style overlap that you’ll get in a lot of. More entry-level pools. This is kind of nice and a much easier way to adjust the height. If you’re especially using it on a hike. That you’re gonna be using for your shelter. Ithink that’s just the way better design to go with but kind of. One of the reasons I picked. It the other interesting thing is the at least doing some price comparison on the top it’s a rubber handle they’ve got a fully adjustable strap. And it’s its actually webbed in here it’s not just a nylon hand extension strap. II thought was kind of nice it’s a sea at. This price point it’s kind of nice to see. That it’s fully it’s fully padded the other interesting thing too was.
It does have this grip extension. That runs down the bottom of the handle grip itself. This is a kind of cool part. It I’m pretty sure this is an Levee a style foam which is. What poly ethylene vinyl acetate but it’s a pretty high quality foam it’s not. Something you’d find on. Something that’s very inexpensive the manufacturer very durable pliable under temperature. That fluctuates from being very cold it’s uh it’s pretty hydrophobic you’ll see. This kind of stuff on like gym floors. And martial arts studios stuff like. That they’ll this padding on there. Because it’s resistant to chemicals oil. That kind of thing so it’s nice to see that’s. All they’ll add they added. This onto it at least as an extension grip but the poles like itself come with a kind of performance basket here.
And that’s what they call. It does have a flex tip. This is not the carbide tip it’s of course removable but. It does kind of have a nice concave point to. It’s gonna be good enough for what I’m gonna be using it for but at least a at least nice to know. You can upgrade you’re looking for something a little bit different. If these get worn out. You can go to the carbide tip so. Icould get to get some good use out of these I’m excited to use them on the trail haven’t had much experience with the black diamond poles but. Some interesting features.
How about a review of the Black Diamond trail flick lock polls. You like polls are not don’t matter. Iguess there’re pros. And cons to taking them. Or leaving them home. Either way the Black Diamond trail is a pretty decent little poll. And I’ll show you why this poll features the comes with the powder basket as well as the little trail baskets like. You buy the black diamonds. That are less expensive. Though a lot of them will just come like. This with the little trail basket just. Something to be aware of these have the carbide tip it’s round. It tends to get a really good bite in the ice. These quite a bit one of the things. One of the reasons to pick the Black Diamond was. They had the flick locks the flick locks are really nice and. They tend to hold really well they’re easy to adjust but. They still they won’t. They won’t slide until. You get a huge amount of pressure on them. If they do a lot of times. What will happen is. They need a bit of adjustment there’s a Phillips head screw here. You can increase the tension just slightly but after a couple of minutes you’ll get. It figured out exactly. What you need these particular polls are a three-piece. You take them all the way down you’re going to get. This big just so you’re aware I’ll get the measurement in an annotation. This particular poll set the Black Diamond trail has a couple of things it’s got a nice wide wrist strap here I’ll show. You the thing I like about. This wrist strap is basically but. Idon’t like having something real heavy wrapped around my wrist. Ilike being able to get into.
And out of it pretty easy. This wrist strap because it’s nice and wide lets. You actually push on these. And get quite a bit of power into them without having a real heavy grip on the pole. You can use just your hands you’ll see let’s see. You can see this in the video. You can see these do have a little bit of flex to them. These aren’t going to be as sturdy as say as a one-piece cross-country ski pole. These don’t have the. This tool, and so they’re not going to be quite so rigid nevertheless they’re strong enough for most of what you need as far as a trekking pole. Or maybe a ski pole depending on how you’re skiing what you’re doing anyway the other thing the back. That the trail model features is.
This neoprene grip right here. One of the things this is really nice for is just. You change from a downhill to an uphill. You change your speed sometimes it’s nice to have a little bit different length to pull. This right (here) than happen to stop. And change your poles readjust settings on the pole. This lets you just choke down on the pole a little farther. And so especially for some of the up. And down a little bit of hilly cross-country type stuff. This is real nice these poles like. This would go for this as well as. Any of the other four adjustable poles. You keep a set like. This they’re on I don’t know. Imentioned there are pound 4 ounces. Or just shy and 3/4 ounces on my scale. This isn’t much weight just to have around. You can throw it on your pack. You can throw it in the trunk so.
If you’re going for say a cross-country ski. This is a real nice set of poles so. You can just have basically a loner pair ok. Somebody else forgets there’s. This can keep them going without ruining their trip. If you’ve got somebody that’s smaller statured doesn’t matter. You can still adjust. It for them the flick locks so far have done really well in the cold. Ihaven’t really used them in wet. And mud, but they tended to hold their adjustment really well that’s about. If you’re looking for a set of poles the Black Diamond trail seems to be a real nice model that’s the basic things. Ilike about I really have no major complaints as far as. They go there’re lighter poles but you’re you’re going to be sacrificing a little bit in the way of the wall thickness of the aluminum.

Hi I’m Doug with Mountain geeks. And I’m gonna be reviewing today the Black Diamond trail back trekking poles I’ve used. These for about a year given to. One of my mountain geeks friends. These are fantastic balls so. They telescope up nice and small so. They can fit like on the side of your pack real light. These are super durable I’ve heard stories about people getting cheaper poles. You know they step wrong. They Bend these are real nice and durable. They have this patented flick lock system which are much easier. Some like the kind. You turn it’s just got. These little locks opening up like. That it’s got two of them. Because it’s three-piece. And then it just telescope out as long as. You want they’ve got markings here so. You can kind of get them to. You want your arms to be fountain ninety degrees right there. You figure out that is on your poles. You remember the number. And then it’s even from then on. Igo about 120 centimeters on the top. Igo 115 on the bottom. You just snap it closed. And it’s not moving some of the other poles. You know you push on them hard. They can kind of telescope a little bit. These things right they are got. These nice rubber handles strap right here. You just kind of turn. It around once that’s good to go. These have a carbide tip on them which is super durable that’s not gonna wear. They came with the baskets on the bottom for snow.
They don’t come with the rubber tips but. Some people like to buy the rubber tips. When you’re you’re somewhere. That have you’re traveling on rock a lot of the time. These can leave little scratches in the rock. And other hikers don’t appreciate. You can get little rubber trips tips. And swap them out you want. These work real great in packed dirt that’s about. hi guys this is Chris with survival Channel. And today we’re going to go over. How to properly use trekking poles. And some different things about trekking poles. These are the Black Diamond. They have the quick lock system piece of the trail sport teams very comfortable on strap here it’s adjustable so. You can adjust it the suit I’m talking about the adjusted. Where it’s comfortable. When you put your hand in. It now I’m going to show. You the proper way to stick your hand in. It you want to come up for here like so. And you want that wedding to fit right there in your grip just like. That I normally walk with my thumb on top but. You can do either way. Whatever feels comfortable to. You just make sure that’s right there in your palm the reason why is. Because when you’re walking if. You have a problem and. You slip the fall this will actually catch. You I mean I can literally put. All my weight down here on.
One hole better when. You have two poles especially. If you’re on a hopping Sideline I’ve done. This at night and this pole slipped off the side well. Istill had this other pole. Ididn’t have this particular pole. Ihad a set of Walmart folds which we’ll discuss in. Another video but right here. This catches you this catch. You when this one gives out. Or this one vices versa. Now with these flip-flops. Irecommend the foot blocks the reason. Iwent with these instead of the Walmart poles. They were the screw tighten system. And they would collapse on. You at times I had. It happens once but. Ifigured if it happened. Once it would happen again. Now these adjust right here with. That flip lock system. These go up to 120 centimeters which is perfect for me I’m 510. And I have a longer torso. Than most people this is right.
You want your elbow but here in your arm. You want it level when. You have your — Falls oh. Another cool thing about hiking poles is. When you’re walking along. And you get something hard like. That you know where the hard ground is. You know where a rock is. You know where the dirt is. And they’re they’re just really good as far as they’re good tools to have for the majority of the time you’re going to actually have in your hands not on your pack. And even if you do calculate the weight in your pack. These are like a pound so. They collapse up very small. They have some more. That I’m going to be looking for my thru-hike next year. These are the distance ones. And they collapse even smaller but. That is not very long ago strap right on to be back your pack. And you’re good to go guys. Hey guys welcome to. Another episode of the Wasatch gear reviewI’m cor bin today we’re going to be taking a look at the trail back black diamond trekking poles sit in tight let’s go ahead. And take a look at them. Now so first off guys. These are made out of aluminum it’s a very thin aluminum it’s basically a narrow diameter aluminum. That maximizes the strength of course. What we go seeing the swing weight as your arms moving along. Ipersonally guys love. Ialways thought these were meant for older folks. You know that trekking is good. Something it’s something. That was older or maybe had an injury used until. Igot my hands on a pair. And started hiking with. And to be honest guys. Idon’t go anywhere without my trekking poles. Now especially if I’m gonna be on steep terrain of course. If it’s hand over hand steep need a place to stash him but for the. Most part these suckers come in really handy so. This is a three section poll. It does have the patent flick locks. That hold the length setting with zero slippage in my opinion I’ve never had them slip on.
Me guys check out these work you’ve got. This little flip here flips open. You adjust you want. It closed it’s locked I’ve never had. One of these guys slip on. Me again like it is a three section pole so. You have both sections. That extend out on they do have a nylon wrist strap. That is adjustable for going over gloves. Idon’t use my hands a lot just to hold on to. It not to really put pressure. Most of the pressure from going uphill. Or downhill is put onto the wrist via. This nylon strapping wrist strap um let’s see. You guys they come with low profile trekking baskets which is. What I have on now that’s. That small basket you see there. They also come with the powder basket. You can screw on tips are interchangeable guys the max length on these bad boys are 55 inches. Or 140 centimeters the minimum length is 26 inches which is 6 35 centimeters the weight per pair is.
One pound four ounces so not too much in my opinion for what help. They do give I rarely have them in my pack so. You can’t consider back way. Imostly use them so. These run about 80 bucks a pair guys really. All guys this is a shorty that’s really. All there is these aren’t the shock the ones. That have the shock syndrome. Anything that you’re just straight trekking poles guys in my opinion black diamonds sell. Some best trekking poles around. You haven’t tried to set. Isuggest you go out. And buy a cheaper set. You know are into using them. And then find yourself a nicer set. You decide on now guys. Ionly have one negative about. These poles and it’s really a nitpick. You know measure them up usually from the ground up to. Iwant them and get them. Both pretty accurate but the marks the centimeter marks. They have or just painted on. You guys can see that they’ve really started wearing after about a year abuse maybe. Even less it was wearing off to.
You can’t really see exactly. It exacts on what increment. You would like so other. That guys that’s really the only complaint. Hey guys I got a new video for you today. This is gonna be a look at an interesting product. That came across I Christmas shopping and. Iwent into Bass Pro Shop. This right here what caught my eye is. It said lighted para cord so at first. Ithought it was like maybe going to dark para cord especially in. This color here but then. That the pad cord actually came in to. This little battery holder so. Ipicked I started looking at. And then I noticed. That basically what it is. This cordage actually has. Iguess LEDs inside of. Or somehow lit by this little unit here so as. You can tell from the packaging this cost does come in a couple different lengths. One right here are 10 feet. This is the smallest. They had so it’s 10 feet 24 feet. Or 50 feet I picked. This guy up so I can try. It out tests it out just. Because again it seems kind of interesting now. This is my eclipse which is actually a brand of parrot from Bass Pro Shop so Bass Pro Shop puts out. This the separate brand of the clips. They had a couple other things with. That same brand there so. One here for 10 feet was about $999. Ithink the 24-foot. One was $1999 and then the 50 foot. One was $3499 ifI’m not mistaken. It was also available in three different colors. They have this kind of neon green. They had a standard white. And then they had a kind of light blue. Iwent with the green. Ifigured it depend on what I would use. It for it would be a lot easier to see the white. Ithink of probably get dirty too easily so as. You guys can tell down here.
It does say that the battery case has a clip on. It also runs off of three double A batteries. It is water-resistant. And I’m assuming they mean the case here so. You look in the back. It says basically you can use. It to decorate the inside outside of your tent canopy. Or camper you can wrap trees. And shrubbery for decoration. You can decorate your campsite. Or walking paths so. It also says they’re not used for climbing all so. Ithink for the most part the usage for this is probably going to be obviously as. You can tell by the packaging when you’re going out camping and things like. That to light up an area so. You have like a designated area. Where your food is gonna be. You need to light up your way to your camp. Something like you can use.
This because of the fact. You can wrap it around. You know like a tree. Or a different area. Something like that so again. One of those things. You can purchase and find a use for it. Ido a lot of stuff with para cord. You know I do bracelets. And things like I like flashlights so. They combine the two into. And into something pretty interesting now. Iwanted to you know purchase. And check it out to see. It definitely would work. How bright you know. And things like that’s because again. This is supposed to be lighting up the whole length of para cord then. You know you get you’re going into the 50-foot. One then that’s a long way to light. It up so in the back. It does give you a little bit of information as far as the battery goes so with the batteries in there the ten foot. One is gonna give you 70 hours the 24. One is going to give. You 40 hours and the 50 foot. One is gonna give you 30 hours so again depending on how much.
You need versus how much time. You want it to be lit is. You know you would get. You know to see which. You would pick up so let. Me go ahead and open. This has a little plastic around the actual para cord part. And it’s kind of wound around there, so I’ll go ahead. And unwind and in the end right here. It has a little plastic tab. Idon’t know you guys can make. It out but it’s a little plastic wrap. It just feels like regular para cord so again. Iwas interested to see. This is gonna work unwind. It again one is ten feet so. Even at 10 feet you get a pretty good length depending on what it is. That you’re gonna be doing with.
And again you have the color options. You know the neon green. One here I think it’s the. Most visible one but as. Iunravel you can kind of see the picture so basically. They have it wrapped around a tree right here. And then you see little points as certain intervals of the cordage. Where it’s actually lit up so let. Me go ahead and take out the battery case portioned sure. Idon’t cut myself so like. More of an impulse purchase. They had it obviously close to the registers. Where people do the majority of their impulse buying cut. This hole, so I can get the pair cord out right. This packaging to the side its back alright so here is the battery case again. It is a plastic case. You have a little instruction manual right here. And I’m seeing this for the first time as. You guys are so just your instructions. It says ultra brought ultra-bright LED bulbs para cord played. It with solid color. Or of polyester and the LED light strips woven together with three cores of polyester so it’s a push on/off switch.
And operates on three double A batteries alright so let’s see. It says open the battery case cover okay alright so. Iam going to pause the video for a second. And put the batteries in there. And I’ll be right back alright guys so. Iwent ahead and installed the batteries basically. You have to do is remove. These two screw the back plate comes out put the batteries in their put the back plate back on. And then replace the screws. Now right off the bat. Ican tell that that is. Something I don’t like especially. If you’re marketing this for camping I really wish. They would have put like maybe a little latch. Something like that’s because again.
You have to take those screws out. Where you’re out in the woods keep track of them there are little tiny screws. And then put them back on. You don’t then this back door is gonna keep on falling out. Another thing is you do have the clip here. It feels a little flim, so I’m assuming this is probably just gonna be so. You can attach it to like a tent. Something like if you’re gonna be running this obviously you’re not gonna be holding this onto your back. Or onto your side anything like. That so you’re not going to be clipping this onto your belt but. You could you wanted to. You wanted to maybe wrap. It around your backpack so. You can signal yourself. You can make yourself. More visible at night obviously. Another option like. Something that you’re going to purchase. And find a usage for it. Now the other thing. Iwanted to see is this area right here. Where the para cord actually attaches to the battery case. How sturdy is something. You tug real hard on it’s going to come out.
And for the most part just your basic tug. You know it feels like. It is gonna hold very nicely so here is the cordage. Ijust don’t Ravel it looks kind of. You know knotted and stuff like. That but it’s its all out so. You have two buttons on the battery unit here so. You have this button right here which is a temporary on so basically just press. You know hold and you’re gonna get the lights come on the para cord. You guys can tell it’s um every couple of inches about. Iwould say about six inches. You have an LED light in there so. You have an LED lights LED strip running on the inside of. This is really cool it’s nice and bright let. Me go ahead and turn off.
This overhead light so. You guys can see it better so again I’m still holding on to. If you’ll I let go. It will turn off so. You guys can tell the difference from no lights. And then it does light up quite a bit which is really nice and again. This is not gonna be used to. You know per se light up on a big area. More of a signal more of a marker. You know so you can tell. Where things are and things like. Now the other button on the top right here is actually the constant on so have. You pressed that the lights will stay on so there. It is so all the lights are on then. You have a couple different modes. You press it again it’ll actually blink very fast like. You need to attract a lot of attention. Something like this is a great mode for. And then you press. It again it’s just gonna be a slower blink so again really cool. You do have a lot of different options.
And then more press it’ll turn. It off so I’m going to turn. This headlight back on so. Ithink for the most part it’s its a pretty cool idea again. If you’re the type of person that’s gonna need. This type of usage from the cordage. And that’s because you know. Some people use lanterns. And things like that but let’s say as. You saw in the packaging if you’re wrapping this around a tree it’s gonna give. You 360 degree view of the light around. That tree so maybe it’s an area. You want to make sure. Nobody goes around you know maybe it’s a big tree. You don’t want anybody knocking into. Anything like you know. You can go ahead and wrap.
This around you can start out at the bottom. And go up so it’s you know nice and tall visibility to. You want to you know thread. This through your camp. Or your tent you know like maybe on the inside of the tent. You can go ahead you know then it’ll give. You a little bit more area light on the inside of the tent again. You do have quite a. Few hours of battery usage so on the 10 foot. One it’s gonna give. What I wouldn’t say 70 hours of usage which is really awesome. You know it’s gonna last. You a long time and again it’s running off of three Triple A batteries which are readily accessible so. You can just you know pack up. You know maybe a couple. More in your bag so. You can have replacements again the. One drawback. Isee is the two screws there. You do have to take out to replace the batteries so you’re gonna have to keep track of those to make sure. They don’t go anywhere but again for the.
Most part you know. If worst-case scenario. You can just kind of duct tape. That were to happen. You do have the momentary on with. One button or the constant on with the other. And then the different flashing so those the fast steady flash. And then the slower flash there so for the. Most part I think it’s a cool product again it’s. More of an impulse thing you don’t necessarily need. You don’t have to go out. It but it’s a nice novelty item so. You have you know maybe. You want to put it in your kids bedroom. Something like you can also do. That like as a nightlight. You know I have two boys. They have a bunk bed so. What I’m gonna do is I’m gonna be threading this through the bunk bed. And then at night they can just turn. It on then it’ll serve as a nightlight the only drawback again.
And with it will not shut off on its own so. You have to physically shut. It off but you know again it’s running off of. You know double-a batteries which. Ican easily replace. If they go dead so there. It is let me get the packaging again. That is the Eclipse lighted para cord from Bass Pro Shop again. One is the ten-foot version. They have a 24-foot version. And a 50-foot version. They have a neon green light blue. Or white so you guys aren’t interested. You know I say go by your local Bass Pro Shop. And check them out maybe pick. One up for yourself so there. It is let you guys have. Any questions thank.
These are our Mountain Smith’s jet pets. These are sold as accessory package strap systems to fit a wide variety of Mount Smith products. Most notably our tour. And a lumbar pack as well as our travel duffles today we’re gonna walk. You through placing the strap pet system on our popular Tour lumbar pack the tour lumbar pack comes already with a shoulder strap. We simply remove the mail buckle from the shoulder strap attachment. And replace it with the mail buffle on the strap bed system you’ll see the common loop on the right & left side panels of the lumbar pack we’ll take the metal ring on the strap pet system feed. It through in kind of t-bar fashion until. It locks in place on the back of the strap bets you’ll notice a webbing feeder guide along with two tension locks simply adjust the tension locks through the webbing feeders to adjust to your torso height the mountain Smith straw beds you.
These are Mountain Smith strap pets as. You can see they are contoured shoulder straps. These allow you to convert. Any strap that compatible Mountain Smith lumbar packs. Or travel trunks for carry as. More of a traditional backpack so. When you’ve got heavyweight in. Any of those items the strap bets are going to go a long way towards load stability. And a more comfortable carry on. Any strap it compatible Mountain Smith piece there’ll be. Some very specific attachment points buckling at the top of the pack as you’ll see here again Clips very easily into place. And then at the bottom of the shoulder strap there’s a toggled attachment point run through the clip slides easily into place, so we’ve attached the strap pets to our tour lumbar pack. And converted it for easy carry again there’s an adjustable sternum strap right here. And connects across the chest adjustment points on.
Either side to really pull in the pack stabilize. That load and now carries. That much more comfortably again with a lot of weight packed in it.
Okay first off a little disclaimer. Ilike packs have lots of packs. This one has really found a nice place released a version of. This one’s new to. Me I haven’t actually used. It yet but I have an older version. That I have and I’m going to actually compare those a little bit but for quick day hikes. Where I just I don’t want to carry a full pack. Or just have this one loaded up lots of times. Ican just grab it. And go it’s pretty nice so anyways. What I’m gonna do is just go over. Some of this is actually the mountain Smith Tour lumbar pack. And as well as the strap vest. And one of the reasons. Ibought this was because. Ihad this guy which is. Idon’t know how old. This thing is I know it’s pre 1999. And the reason I ended up with the new. One was because from. All the reviews I could read. This version wasn’t compatible with the strap that’s which I’ll explain. And show a little bit later after receiving the strap that’s. Idetermined I actually didn’t need to get.
Any bag I would have been fine with the old. One and I just wanted to make sure. That was very clear so for those of. You that do have these older ones I’m like. Isaid this is really old there’s a there’s a model. Even before this I think. Where this is a little bit different it’s a little similar to. This but you still have. These compression straps on the bottom. Whereas this old one doesn’t. Even have those the main thing with the strap it’s. Though the new ones. And even the previous model have a buckle here a quick-release buckle. Whereas the older. One has this woven. Whatever you know they’re called anyways. What I noticed was when. This showed up I figured.
This might be sewn on but. You can actually take. This apart and so if. You take off this clip part. You could actually then just thread. It through here and you’d probably be good to go so with. That I’m gonna put these aside for a second. And we’ll talk about. Some differences. And similarities that still exist between. These packs one thing to note like. Isaid I know this is its pre 1999. And it’s probably I don’t know. This thing’s probably bordering on 2530 years old maybe. Even bit older than. That I don’t know but it’s in it’s in great shape you’ll notice. That you know there’s a lot of similarities. You still have these handles here. We they both have. If I can find it shoulder straps. You know a little bit difference there. This one’s a little beefier.
Than the old one the hip tacks again. More padding this one is. You know not much padding there so. That was kind of upgrade. That I like to this. One and I’m not sure. When the change occurred but. This one is made in the United States the new stuff including the strap pets has made in Vietnam. Ibelieve that was on here somewhere designed in Colorado made in Vietnam. If you look at the zippers. You know kind of similarity. They both have they. Both have pretty good sized polls on them but the older model there. And they’re both pretty beefy zippers but the older model is a little chunkier.
And everything so we’ll see. These zippers have been great. Imean there’s been dirt. And all kinds of stuff. And I’ve never had any problems with. These zippers hopefully. This one will be the same again a lot of similarities. They made the insides of these new ones really bright. And they’ve allowed. You to put it says a headphone. You might be able to fit a small bladder in there. And run the hose up through there I’m not quite sure. This one’s not designed for. That but again you have. This little internal pocket which has been put to the front instead of the back on here. This one not as bright. You have just one big pocket no in here. And then the new one. You have a big pocket with a divider. That is padded I think so. You can put a tablet. Or something in there which not really sure. If I like that or not but. Idon’t know if it’ll really compromise. How I use it both have side water bottle pockets.
Ibelieve the old ones are a little bit bigger but as I’ll show later. Istill can fit up 32 it’s bottle in here. They both have pockets on the front. That you can kind of snore store stacks. Or stuff in they both have the little bungee not sure which. Ilike better really like. This one you only have. These two connection points really. That you can choose from yeah. These little daisy chains attached here but because of how they’ve put. This together you’re pretty well limited with. Where it’s structured there. Unless you want to take. It apart and move things around. Or add additional bungees. That was like I said. This is nice a nice feature. Yet the compression on the bottom was the old. One didn’t you just add the loops.
This one does have. Where your side compressions attached. And you can pull here. It goes all the way around the pack so. It kind of sucks that up we’ll see. How this one works it’s got. These compression straps here so. It pulls up this way. Whereas this one you had. This one. We don’t even know. If you see that on camera. This one here on the side. And then and then the. One that kind of did the bottom, so we’ll see. How those work try. And think other than. That I think that’s the majority. You know of the similarities. And differences so I think. Iwill put the strap pets on. And then maybe show. You what this thing can haul least a little bit. What I sometimes carry. And go from there so. Ijust thought I’d actually show. How these guys work here so.
These are the strap pets so. You have to remove your shoulder strap but then. You end up with these adjustable shoulder straps here I’ve got actually looking these guys just buckle in right there so. That part’s pretty self-explanatory pretty easy. Now the bottom portion. Though has this. Idon’t know little metal ring thing on here. And, and I was kind of looking dead I’m like well. You do with that but. They explained it fairly well. You kind of need to tuck. These in and then you have. This middle ring right here as well. And I’m gonna try to get. This up close on camera so. You can see it but. You actually just sort of. That through and then pull. It into place so that’s. How you do. That and the same thing over here on. This side again you just pop. It through make sure it’s not gonna fly back out on. You which this one is sement want to do.
And then you put some pressure on. It I think once you get the pressure on there. Idon’t know that it’d be an issue. Ican’t see those popping out. When you’re actually wearing it. You can also one thing I didn’t mention before. They both have the ability to tuck there’s a little pocket on. Both of them right here. If you want to hide like passports. Or whatever and then the hip pockets can tuck internally on the other. One there’s some velcro here so. It holds it in a little bit better but really probably about the same so that’s that’s. How you attach that. And then you know you get. It you can choose to tuck those. If you don’t want to use them. Or you know you’ve got the pack here with shoulder straps which. You can see pictures of. That all over the internet. And everything but yeah works I’ve tried. It on it seems fairly comfortable up to see hopefully I’ll be the hike in. This week and then we’ll see. How it goes so anyways. Iwill now show what some of the things.
That you can get in here ok so. Igot this thing full up so probably. One little over court actually with. What I carry I crammed a lot of stuff in there. That I might not take on every trip it’s kind of things. That I take for specific things but. This will just give. You an idea of kind of what this guy can hold. And I didn’t even use. These straps which I could have. You know strapped on. Some additional shoes like flip-flops. Or a jacket or something else but. One thing I wanted to point out is. This is a 32 32 ounce hydro flasks. And I can fit that in on. Either side so I can take two of those. And carry my wife’s. She doesn’t want to pack. It or whatever I did draw.
This in tight I’m hoping you know. Ithink when I’m wearing this it’s not going to be thought I’m not gonna be running in. That I have a separate pack. That I use for trail running and. Everything and I don’t carry. These anyways, so I don’t I’m not too concerned about the Jocelyn out. Or anything they seem fairly secure but. You know if that changes I’ll be sure to update. Or whatever but anyways I’m gonna show. You what I’ve shove in here so got. This Hydra flask like. Isaid I could fit. One on the other side that’s in there on the bottom. Istrapped my trekking poles which those. Idon’t know they seem a bit loose so. Idon’t know if I probably could cinch. It down a little bit tighter. Because that would compress the things in there a bit too but typically I’ll probably be using those so.
Idon’t know that they’d be in there. Unless for some reason. Ineed my hands for something else but just thought I’d show those. This front pocket here got a key loop so that’s probably. Where the key to the card go got. Some snacks you know my little field note notebook main pocket. Iwent a little nutso. And just shoved everything in here for the. Most part this is where things get a little bit strange sometimes. Ilike to go out and attempt painting or drawing water coloring something like. That so you know we’re going on real casual things we’re going short hikes. And I’ll sit down and just draw. Or paint something so that’s that’s. All this is actually owe. And that so that I just shoved in there. And this is actually. What I’ve used that pack cold pack for a lot is to carry. This with some water. And snacks and stuff so.
When you just go out. Ican do that stuff so. That worked out well so that’s. That I also have you know kind of my emergency essentials here I’ve got a little multi-tool a lighter. And some cordage a little bag GPS small first aid kit headlamp. And rain jacket that might be. Everything I’ve got shoved in there but as. You can see that was exile shoved in. This part I didn’t really use. That let’s why I’m saying I’m not sure that’s gonna be an issue. That kind of compresses back there pretty good, so I’m gonna move the camera here it’s just. It just a little bit so. You can kind of see the pack. And everything that was in. It so that’s what I had in. It I still had a room. If I really wanted to shove. Some more stuff in there. Ialso probably could have moved. That rain jacket out to the outside. And would have had a lot. More space internally in the pockets so far from my experience with the old. On these things carry really well, so I’m not not too concerned about.
That like I said my main thing was just to kind of go through. Some similarities. And differences and for those of. You that own the old pack. Even though everywhere. Ilooked said it’s not compatible with. This strap that’s once the strap that’s themselves showed up. They had a little statement. And you can’t read. That on the camera anyways. It says step two ifs. You have a pre 1999 lumbar remove the male end of the side release hardware from the strap it’s. And thread the webbing through the latter lock buckles so. You can do it my wife was like oh. Now you can return the pack but. Ithink she’s gonna let. Me keep it we’ll see. You know like I said. Ihave a nice collection of packs. Ilike having a variety. And the other one can always be used to store emergency supplies in the car. Or just is to fill up with stuff. That if we want to take somewhere quick but so far.

It’s a gear tester here. This video I just want to give. You a quick look at a product. That I’ve been using for the better part of a week. And a half this is my much-loved. And much used to or lumbar pack from mountain Smith I’ve had. It for over five years. Ihave used and used. They made some modifications. Some changes over the last couple years to. This bag but it is just worked for me. This on a regular basis oftentimes every day it’s near. Me in my vehicle or in my place of work I’ve got a number of things. Ireally like to have with. That I’ve got in it comes with just a standard shoulder strap a single shoulder strap. And then you can pull out. These flaps it makes. It a lumbar pack it’s a great bag but. Irecently came across. This little innovation from Mountain Smith. These are called strap X. What they do is they replace your single strap. And in essence turn. This lumbar pack into a backpack okay. And I’m just gonna show. You throw them on here give. Some of my feelings on them just take the standard strap off like so lay. That aside this is not a permanent modification in. Any way can go back.
And forth very easily. Now you’re just gonna okay click pin like so. And for the purpose of. This demonstration I’m just gonna tuck. These the lumbar belt back in. And oftentimes it just like. This with a shoulder strap. Or in the last week. And a half or so with. These strap pets then you’ll see there’s. This little metal component right here almost looks like a piece of a buckle. You can see both sides of. This backpack here is. This little tab okay. And then another little almost like a component to go on a buckle. Or a strap component. What you’re gonna do is you’re gonna slide the portion of the strap through like so at an angle okay. And then pivot it around. Now it’s very secure okay I’m gonna do.
Both sides this is a very simple process making sure. That I’m getting it lined up slide. It in at an angle push. It through and you’re gonna just make sure. It fits correctly pull up on. That I’ve never had them come loose okay it’s very simple to put them on. And off but once they’re attached there is kind of double portion here. That makes it almost impossible for it to come loose on its own. You have a lumbar pack. That carries a little bit. More like a backpack. Ireally liked that over the last week. And a half as I’ve used. Icarry the bag on and as I’ve gone on. Some day hikes some walks with my dog I’ve really enjoyed having this bag with.
Idon’t often carry out on those walks with. Because they’ve had them the backpack straps on. Ithought man this is awesome. These strap pets are gonna run. You about twenty-five. Or thirty dollars and so it’s its not a very expensive modification. You have multiple lumbar packs. You can switch them back. And forth and then. You can also just pop back very easily to the standard single shoulder strap so there. You go the strap pets they’re super easy to attach. They are very comfortable I’m not sure. How much weight it would be really comfortable to carry with them. This lumbar packs the tour lumbar pack is relatively small so between eight. And twelve pounds basically is. What I’m running in. It oftentimes less that but the strap pads are just awesome I’m really impressed with the quality it’s got.
Some reinforcement some padding here in the shoulder strap portion. It just makes carrying the bag a little. More comfortable this single strap. And the simple strap was never a problem but the strap pets just make. It a little bit better. And there you go so I’d encourage. If you’ve got a lumbar pack from mountain Smith buy. One of these strap at sets. And attach them I think you’ll be really happy with them. You don’t have a tour lumbar pack. One of the other lumbar packs from mountain Smith maybe. That extra money you want the lightest pole available then you’re going to have to live without. Some final considerations. When you’re shopping for hiking poles are wrist straps baskets. And tips most poles allow. You to adjust the length of the wrist straps in order to get a. And then pull apart on the top two trekking pole sections right here at the top So. All I have to do is pull them apart until. Ihear a positive click That is going to tell. You that the central cord. That runs throughout. This pole is completely tight. And it is a very durable very secure cord So. Now I have got the pole set up The next thing. That you can do is just adjust the pole So there is a couple of different sizes with the Alpine FLZ poles There is the 110 centimeter 125.
And 140 Each of those are different lengths. And you have eight inches of adjust ability with. Each of those So right. Now I am holding the 125 size. And with the Black Diamond flick locks. You can just adjust. It from 105 centimeters. All the way up to 125 centimeters So. You have a lot of adjust ability there. And with a pole that is. This collapsible and. This lightweight it is really great to have. That feature of the adjust ability Going up to the grips of. This pole you have a couple of different materials You have a natural cork grip which is really nice on your hand. And it really wicks away sweat It is lightweight. And it works in colder temperatures with gloves but also in warmer temperatures.
If your hand is perspiring Underneath of the regular grip. You have got a dual density foam grip And so. This is really nice. If you need to just make quick adjustments. If you are going uphill. Or if you are on uneven terrain You can grab. This pole and different heights In the same way up at the top. You have a nice rubber top on. This and it has a pretty flex surface so. If you need to or want to palm the top of your pole. You can definitely do. That It feels comfortable in your hand The strap on. This pole is really nice and padded. And it is a pretty wide strap so the way Black Diamond designed. It is really simple to adjust. That You just kind of tug on top to make. It a little bit loose. And on the bottom to tighten. It up These relieves a lot of stress on your wrists. When you are hiking It is super easy to use soft on the inside. And it is really padded.
And really comfortable The shaft sections here are very durable aluminum So. They are both very strong. And lightweight Moving down to the tip. You have Black Diamond flex tech tips So. This is a replaceable piece It is a press fit tip so in the unlikely event. That you would get the tip stuck between two rocks. Or you would put the trekking pole in a position. Where the shaft section might break. This tip is meant to break before the actual trekking pole Also after years of use. If you need to replace. This piece like I said. It is a replicable piece. That you can buy separately Down at the bottom Black Diamond does include a carbide end. And a rubber end Right. Now I have that carbide end on their But with the packaging of the trekking poles there is a Velcro strap This pulls the trekking poles together. If you want to use. It that way but on. That strap there is a small pocket. Where they keep the rubber tips So. It is definitely something. That adds a lot of value to the trekking poles.
And you get both of those tips with the trekking poles On the tip here. Ido has just the standard basket. That comes with the poles This is a wider diameter basket. Than I have seen with. Some ultra lightweight poles. And it has little cut outs here so. When you have the pole collapse down. You can actually attach. This section so that. All the sections stay together Black Diamond also includes a wider diameter basket so. You can use this one for trekking and use can use. This one in winter conditions. If you might be in snow. And that sort of thing So. It definitely adds a lot of value with. These two different baskets When. You want to collapse the poles down. It is really easy What. Inormally do is I find. That little button and. Iseparate the pole sections a little bit just so.
Ican get a thumb on. That button and then collapse. That down That gives enough give for. That cord to be able to collapse down the other sections So. You just pull them part And like. Isaid I have the 125 centimeter size This collapses down to be about 15 inches in length The longer version is a little bit longer The shorter. One is a little bit shorter But. All in all that pack size of 15 inches is pretty unbeatable for a pole. That has got so many different feature. And such a smart design. And really high quality materials It is the Black Diamond Alpine FLZ poles.

Hey guys chad from sticks vlog tonight. Ijust want to do a little update video from my last video. Idid which was on changing the grips on the Black Diamond Alpine carbon cork trekking poles as. You remember I stripped the grips. That originally came on these poles. Icompletely stripped them off. And then I installed. Or in the video I attempted to install on the Gossman Gear LT grips. Iended up before I made the video. Everything I successfully installed. One so that’s why I decided. You know I’m going to do a video. And show how to do. And then in the process of doing. Iended up ripping the. Iwas actually doing the video on despite. Istill posted the video. Everything just kind of show. Everybody what was going on but anyway after making. That video I was talking with being from Goose beating gear. And of course he saw the video. What happened he had a pair of gossamer gear grips. That were lying around. He wasn’t using and asked. If I’d be interested in them so. Isaid sure he sent them out to. They came in the mail today so of course. Icame in I was super excited. Iwas eager I was ready to of course remove the damaged grip.
And put on one of the. You know the good grips. Iwill say one thing I noticed. When every sent them to. Me obviously these are. Some older grips that a gossamer gear used on the LT poles there’s not a lot of differences there they’re very similar. And I’m completely happy with them just like. That the regular grips but just a couple of things to point out as. You can see the new grips on the bottom of course the cutouts on the back are just a little bit different. One other thing it’s gonna be hard to show. Ishould have showed. This beforehand but. This is the new grip here. And compared to it doesn’t look as bad but. One is actually a lot. More rounded it doesn’t flare out just as much as the. Iactually took a dremel with a little sanding wheel. And at the edges off to kind of help round. That out just a little bit. More other this may not be doing a lot justice but.
Ifeel like the newer ones are also slightly thinner. They have a smaller diameter. Than the new ones do. Or the older ones do. However regardless they’re just as comfortable in my hand. Or really liking to. Ithink it’s just the feel of. It grips and then of course the design but. Ireally really like the gossamer grips they’re. Some of my favorite grips from. Any of the trekking poles. And I’ve used so far but anyway so. Iwent ahead I pulled. This was the good I actually just slid. It rights off I had to put a little effort into. It didn’t just completely slide right off. It took a little bit but. Ididn’t use any glue. Anything to glue these on so. It did come off I didn’t have to worry about sanding or. Anything like that to the pole laughter. These on a few people had mentioned. They use hairspray for like in bicycle shops. And stuff to put grips on handlebars so.
Some of my wife’s hairspray. She got a little upset. Itold her anyway some of my wife’s hair spray just a little bit just kind of spray. It around the edge and then started working this on their anyway. When I’m just fine also I’m curious I’m not going to try. It but I’m wondering if. Once the hairspray kind of dried. That kind of helped create like a little bond kind of like a glue would. Something like that but anyway they’re on here they’re great. Ilove them I want to say a huge (thanks) to Ben for being kind enough to send. These out to me after. Iscrewed up and broke. One other thing I want to point out is. That there’s a little bit of a weight difference to between. These with the newer ones the total weight was thirteen point six ounces. That means each pole weighed six point eight ounces. And there’s just a little bit of difference here.
Iwant to show that real quick so here is. One pole one comes in at 67 ounces so that’s a full ounce lighter. Than the other pole. Ihad the other grip on. Now then one so there that’s six point seven ounces as well. It must be just a little over six point seven ounces for. Each pole both of them on there it’ll angst with fluctuate between thirteen point four. And thirteen point five. Or at least it was earlier. Now it’s gonna stick on thirteen point four. It looks like I’ve saved anywhere between. One point five to two ounces by using these older grips so that’s. Even better six point six ounces. Now for these poles total like. Isaid in the process. You might watch the video. Idid lose about two inches of overall length because of the way. Some other folks suggested. Icould have just drilled the little rivet out. Some putts um it was called a pop rivet. That was in the top of the heads the blank diamond heads. Icould have saved likely. Icould have saved the entire length of the pole.
Iwouldn’t have that issue. However the overall length. Ican’t remember what it is off the top of my head but it’s still plenty enough for me so. It worked out pretty well but anyway guys so. What I’ve got here like. Isaid is a basically it’s a 67 ounce Pole. Now it’s point of reference my gossamer gear lt4 poles. These jokers are four ounces of piece. Ijust love them I can definitely tell the difference in the weight. Idon’t know I don’t really want to get into comparing all. That stuff but you can see. That there is a significant difference in the diameter of the shaft on the LT 4. And on the blank time in pole. What I do like about the Black Diamond poles. Though is they will. Ican’t do this video. It came too close but. They will paint down a lot smaller. Than my LT fours they do have the flick locks. That makes it really nice for adjusting the pole especially. When you’re using it to set up your shelter so. Some advantages and I’ve got to say.
Ican’t remember the total weight of these poles. Ifirst got I’m wanting to say. That was around 17 or 18 out. Something like that but. That was with that was with straps the original grips. That came on and decked out basically but. Now they’re down to. You know right on thirteen. And a half ounces, so I’m a little. More comfortable with. And also they actually. Icould remove these baskets off the end. And probably cut out at least. Another half ounce there so. Icould probably get. These down to about thirteen ounces so. That is that’s gonna be good for me. Ithink anyway guys. Ijust wanted to give an update since the first video just went so terribly wrong again.

Everyone bent from leaving survival. And today we’re gonna take a look at. Some trekking poles from Black Diamond so stick with. Once you’ve used trekking poles on your longer hikes you’ll probably never go back to not using them. And it’s worth the extra money to get lightweight heavy-duty poles with comfortable grips. These are the Black Diamond aluminum flz Alpine poles very nice aluminum folding design. You can get them in three different sizes. These are the 125 to 105 centimeters. Or the medium size they’re very easy to deploy. You just simply unfold them. And clip the two sections together just by pushing one into the other the sections have. This protected Kevlar cord in the middle. You basically just connect them together. And then you pull the section tight until. That button pops out. That fell z poles have what’s called their flick lock. You basically just flick. And then you can adjust. It to the proper height. And then just clamp. It back closed it stays really tight a good place to start. When sizing your trekking poles is stand on level ground grab on to the grip. You want your forearm to pretty much be level but. All does come down to personal preference. They pack down very small. You just wrap them with. This velcros here which also contains the additional bits installed on them right. Now are the carbide bits which are great for rocky. Or snowy icy conditions. And then you also get the rubber tips which are great for when you’re walking on pavement.
Or really flat ground they’re very easy to stow just by wrapping them with. This velcros that just comes off. And then they detach. He visto y la verdad es que tengo la suerte de haber visto muchos y tengo la suerte de haber probado muchos porque digo esto con tal rotundidad digo esto porque el alpino fz o flc z este el ez le ponen unos nombres a veces complicadísimos es un palo de trekking que tiene unas características muy interesantes vamos a entrar en materia la primera cosa es que. Me gusta es verdad que el aluminio es muy ligero pero no es lo más ligero del mundo puesto que hay versiones de este palo o de esta línea de palos hechos en carbono que daniela aluminio. Me gusta porque acostumbra a ocurrir una cosa es que el aluminio se dobla pero cuesta mucho romperlo y eso.
