Let's go ahead and talk about these Carbon FLZ Distance Pole from Black Diamond. They're like trail series that are an aluminum pole which is a three-piece extendable pole where this is like their z Breakdown type.

Trekking poles are all basically the same if you really think about it but there are certain aspects to a trekking pole that make them more comfortable or super lightweight. In this case, this is a full carbon pole so what you're looking at is basically the entire shaft of the pole is carbon fiber. This pole set comes in at just under a pound total which is crazy lightweight and that's something that I really like about these poles. I've been using them for the past several months they're just so light and so easy to use that they make traveling with them really easy. One of the things that I don't necessarily like about this pole though is the fact that it is that like z shape breakdown. Essentially the pole breaks down in this. Since so it makes it a really small package to be able to put in your backpack and such but if I'm using this for a tarp type situation where I am setting up a shelter using trekking poles. Then I don't have as much versatility in being able to drop one end of the tarp by lowering the length or shortening the length of the pole

This distance series from black diamond is meant more for that type of setting but such a lightweight pole that it's nice to have on the trail for any type of activity that you're doing now. This does have this classic Black Diamond flick lock system to it. So if I push that open, then I'm able to extend this to the different lengths that I have.

This pole happens to be the 105 to the 120 centimeters. They do have a shorter one than this and then also a longer one than this looking.

At the top of the pole, you've got a molded foam and I do really like that they put these cutouts into the foam.

It breathes really well on your hand so that you've got not sweaty hands every time that you are hiking.

Top section of the pole and you want to pull those sections apart once you pull. Then apart far enough you'll see a. Little blue line and a button that's going to expose itself you'll hear a. Positive click and then it'll be set up. And that means that the cord on the inside is tensioned all the way and you. Have a very secure pole so i opened that. Up and you can see the button there. Exposed itself and from here you can. Adjust the pole so this top section of the poll is separate from. There you can adjust it up and down i have 125 centimeter poles in my hand. Here and they're going to adjust from 105 centimeters all the way up to 125 so. This is a great option for someone who. Either doesn't want fixed-length pose or. Knows that they're going to adjust their poles in different ways this is perfect. For if you're hiking on uneven terrain and you want to make quick adjustments or if your someone that is in between sizes on the fixed length poles and you. Really need to dial in that fit the. Black diamond flick locks couldn't be any easier to use you just flick it open. With your thumb adjust it easily up and. Down and then flick it closed it doesn't. Take a lot of force to open and close this lock but once the lever is closed. It is an extremely secure and tight seal. And you're not gonna have to worry about your pole going anywhere so really great. Locks there, and they're pretty lightweight as well so that keep the weight down for this ultra light pole. Moving up to the grips you have black. Diamonds foam grips these are non-slip grips so you have some texturing here in the top the thing. I really like about foam grips is in. Warmer weather if your hands are perspiring the foam works away sweat. Really well you can also use them in colder temperatures you don't feel cold through the foam grips, and they as well. Work really well with gloves there's. Some shaping to it and you even have a little extension below that grip so if you need to grab the pole at a lower. Spot you can and there's a flat top to. This grip as well so you can palm the top of the pole if you need to but really easy to adjust and comfortable strap at the top is going to help take. That strain off of your wrists as you're hiking these are aluminum poles so. You've got the durable of aluminum, but they're also very lightweight so the different sizes of. This pole will weigh in at different weights, but they're ultra lightweight. For having the feature of that locking mechanism moving down to the tip you. Have black diamonds tech tips so these. Are a little bit smaller diameter of a basket on this tip and it's a really. Great feature that black diamond. Includes two sets of tips they include the carbide tips which give you really. Good traction on dirt and on trails on. Ice as well and they also include a. Replaceable rubber tip which is what i have on here now the rubber tip is great. On improved surfaces or harder surfaces. Where you don't want the carbide tip to slip around and those tips are included. In a velcro strap the velcro strap that. Comes with the packaging has a small pocket in it and the extra set of tips. Are in that pocket when you want to break down the poles for that small pack. Size what i normally do is pull the two. Sections at the top apart a little bit just so i can get a thumb on that button and i can press that down then you undo. The other sections of the pole you can undo the lock as well. Make sure that's compressed down all the way and you have your small pack size so. These are great for trail runners they're lightweight enough that if. You're running along and you need to throw them in your pack or something like that you can either run with them. Or put them in a pack for ounce counting. All right welcome to the first official gear review on the new channel and to. Kick it off we're going to start with the black diamond women's distance flz. Trekking pole so these z shaped. Collapsible trekking poles come in two sizes 95 to 110 which weigh 15 and a. Half ounces and 105 to 125 which are a. Little over a pound they also come with. Extra tips so you get the plastic tips. On them when they arrive and then a carbide tip which is in the packaging you'll find a velcro strap around the poles when they arrive at your door so another really great feature with these poles is the grips and the wrist straps. The grips are moisture wicking and really comfortable and soft in the hand but firm enough for when you're walking they won't collapse on you and the wrist straps indicate right and left and have the velcro on them to tighten and loosen, so they can fit your wrist properly it's. A feature that i have mixed reviews on until i try them out to be honest because i don't often use the straps when i ski i go strapless and so. We'll see how they are with hiking and. So to get these on the trail we're going to go up to big meadows reservoir which is just below wolf creek pass, and we'll. See how these things perform all right. So we're on our hike on the lake big. Meadows reservoir just down the pass from wolf creek and decided to rain on. Is today but it's still a gorgeous day a little bit of sleet a little bit of hail maybe some snow, but we have the pups. With us and our little dude. So the nice part about having these. Trekking poles they're super lightweight which is a huge plus but the stability you get when you're climbing uphill is huge and. Really good with it, so they're firm their goods are in the ground and you have a nice little walk up with them it's really nice so what i like most. About these poles is the compacted other. So the flip lock is really simple you. Flip it open you lock it tight and then there's a button that you just press in and the poles collapse to about that big and then you simply detach and. What's really cool is the basket simply. Clicks into itself these are nice and compact i can put them right in my pack. In the water bottle holder cuz on my pack that I'm using today there's two bottle holders only one of them has my bottle but super compact and both fit in the holders which is really nice. You. Substantial enough to keep me nice and warm when it you know the wind is blowing and the temperatures drop a little bit. So we just got back from our hike and i. We're taking a closer look at the LEKI Micro Vario Cor-Tec TA lady trekking poles. These are the great option for those who are looking for a collapsible and lightweight pole. It also has a lot of features and is great for travel, hiking, backpacking and anything else. The thing I want to talk about first with these poles is just the collapse ability. This isn't your traditional telescoping pole where all the segments kind of go inside of each other and telescope down.

This is truly a collapsible pole. As you can see there is a central cord that runs through each of the sections here and it's very durable.

length collapses down really small. It`s easy to throw in your pack, in your luggage if you're traveling. If you're not using the poles during a particular part of your hike you can either lash them to the outside or just throw them right inside the pack.

It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. You have that central cord that runs through the sections and the first thing I do is I attach the sections. It almost reminds me of the way a tent pole is structured. Each of the segments lock inside of each other and the second thing you want to do is find the two separate sections here up towards the top of the pole. You want to separate them and once you have pulled them far enough you will hear a positive click and a little button will make itself known they're. The first couple times you do it might feel like you have to pull on that a little bit harder than you would like but that's just to get a very secure hold. Once I do that I pull it and you have a positive click. Now all of the pole sections are securely connected to one another.

This is an adjustable pole so unlike some other collapsible lightweight poles like. This it's not fixed length. You can definitely adjust from 100 centimeters all the way up to 120 so you do have a lot of versatility with this pole. You don't have to worry about not getting the correct fit for your height to adjust the pole. Right now I have it set at its lowest usable length which is 100 centimeters but it's really easy to adjust with leaky speed lock.

In order to adjust it all you have to do is open the lock. Adjust it to your preferred height. I'm gonna adjust it. All the way up to 120 centimeters and when you do that it just it stops here at the top so you know you're at its highest point and then close the lock with your thumb. Tit's as easy as that there's no twisting, no turning. It's just open and closed. LEKI uses their argon grips for this pole which is a really high-quality argon comfortable handle. They definitely don't skimp there. So really great handle on there and you've got an extended grip here.

If you want to grip the pole at a different height while you're hiking you don't have to make those minor adjustments. You don't have to make the adjustments as often. If you want to have your hand on top of the pole you want to palm the pole. It really fits nicely into the palm of your hand and has some dimpling there and some resistance. So it's really easy to grip the top. You also have a really soft nice woven strap here and it's really easy to adjust for your height. Take the pressure off of your wrists with a strap so to adjust this. All you do is pull up on the top portion of the strap. You can make it longer or shorter and then just pull down on the top and it locks in.

Hi I'm Jordan these are the alpine and carbon core trekking poles by black diamond i found it for about two and a half years and i have really put these things through the wringer they're. Awesome I've seen a couple of videos where people have mentioned them breaking a little bit down low I've really torqued. These things, and they have not broken yet so i think it just kind of depends on the angle and kind of how cautious you are with them but to tell you a. Little bit about it I'm gonna start from the top and go work my way down up here. It's got a nice little rubberized grip it's kind of textured like a golf ball I'm not sure if the new ones have it but this old one still has it and it's really nice it feels good on your thumb. Or if you hold your poles like this sometimes it fits nicely in the palm of. Your hand these guys are removable these. Little straps they're pretty nice you. Can adjust them i don't really use them too much but sometimes they're nice to have something there just in case you got something really steep and sketchy and you're worried about dropping your poles and a big part about this is this. Poles and they don't really use it either i mean you can kind of choke up on it if you're getting on some higher terrain you know you've got some rocks things like that you're really working up but i don't really use it that often. It's just a little bit extra weight but. Who cares these are trekking poles it's not that. Big of a deal to me so the construction of these poles is pretty solid they. Extend all the way to about 135 centimeters i believe and then that's. Where they're gonna break off to that. Stopping point yeah so you get about 100. 335 centimeters I'm about 510 and this. Is fully extended for me i usually rest. Mine at both of these points at 125 centimeters and that's just fine it's. Good that they have a little bit of this. Length when you extend them so that way if you're pitching a mid shelter or you want your tarp to be a little bit higher you have that flexibility with these and i have to commend these flick locks pretty well they're pretty solid they. Will open up a little bit if you hit them just right like that like on a branch but for the most part they're. Gonna stay locked, and they're gonna stay solid and i really do prefer these over black diamond z formation they have with. Like that little rubberized wire in between there i don't like that i don't think it's very solid you can kind of go like this with it and i feel like it's just gonna bend and break on me I'm. Not gonna have any problems with this my. Only negative kind of complaint about the flick locks. Are you can't really close these all the. Way because they it would put too much. Pressure on the carbon fiber i think maybe I'm a limp or a coward i don't know i just don't want to put that much strain on such a small like narrow. Diameter area of carbon fiber but that. Constructions really good you know you can really just tank these things in this stuff, and they're not gonna go anywhere they're fantastic. Going down here you can use these as ski. Poles i haven't skied with them I'm not much of a skier but i did a friend that uses it, and he likes them he you can put. Different baskets on there it's very customizable to your preferences i can't. Really elaborate too much on it just because i don't ski much but I'm a buddy. Who really does like black diamond poles, and he does have a pair of these that he does take scheme he likes them this. Little bit right here it warps over time. I have beaten the crap out of it and so. That's why it's kind of torn up a little bit but it still spends a little bit and. It really has held on impressively you. Can take it honors put it off its kind of up to your preference but i just kind of keep them on there just so I've got something there and then working our way down to the very end of the shaft is where you have the big old buddy the carbon corks carbide tip so carbide is a. Way to go with these things this thing. Hasn't lost any kind of formation at all no dings nothing it is just great and it. Grips into all sorts of surfaces it'll. Grip in the wood it's gonna leave a mark and it really grips in the granite well. Here in colorado we've got tons of granite and you can just dig this guy. Into some of those little rock faces and it's gonna stick and it's solid and i. Love that you know if i feel like I'm. Losing my balance i hit something I'm good i know it's gonna catch me and it's gonna stick and it really doesn't tear. Up the rock at all either unless using it on something porous like sandstone which you probably should know going in that. It's gonna tear it up yeah overall these. Are really good they're definitely by no means the lightest out there they're kind of heavy they're almost a pound for the pair, but they are so solid and i. Really depend on it as a shelter piece if you're using mids i have an ultimate i use this with and same with my tarp i. Rely on this you know you can dig it into the ground i use this as my platform and this guy's not going anywhere or if i want to do it the other way and i want to have a really solid top to my shelter i know i can dig. This guy down at the very bottom put it on the ground maybe an inch or two and it's not going to go anywhere wiggle and really high winds, and they're really. Solid when you combine them together for. Those shelter setups but overall it's a. Really great pole i do recommend it. Definitely check it out before you get it makes sure the script feels good to you if you don't like the way it feels. There's some really good leki poles out there that i recommend they might be just a little bit more comfortable for your hiking style but overall great. Poles for all sorts of uses from I've. Used this thing in the mountains here in colorado i took these on the kalalau trail out in Hawaii a couple months ago I've used these things everywhere, and they're probably one of the best investments that I've made and you just. All right today we are going to be reviewing the black diamond alpine. Carbon cork trekking pole i got these a. Couple years ago and I've used them successfully for several seasons now. Actually i think I've had them for four. Or five seasons and I've done about a dozen different mountain hunts with them. There's a lot of different tracking polls up there day everything under the sun you could think of for dream of but. I found that I've really come to like. These and I'll go through a few of the features that i really like so the. One thing i really enjoy what these. Is the wrist drops they don't come loose. We keep your hand in there they work really well I've never had an. Issue with them when they get wet they dry out a credibly fast cork handle. Incredibly comfortable we've got like a. Rubber is kind of deal down here if you want to hold it more let go yeah just. Kind of more like a stick i guess versus having this contoured cork handle but. The one thing i do really like with this cork handle as well when it's in. Extremely cold out and below zero when. You're holding this with a thinner glove your hand doesn't get cold some of the cheaper trekking poles will have like a. Plastic tape grip and that plastic will be ice-cold when you grab onto it shows your hand but these are pretty good they don't freeze your hand on you. The other thing that's really great with. This black diamond the pole in. Particular are the walking hubs here no. This might not seem like a big deal to. Have a clamp like that but compared to a. Twist lock the twist lock those tend not. To lasas along and also the twist lock. When you put a ton of pressure on them. Sometimes they'll fail and slide out. Essentially wrecked and I've had a lot. Of twist locks fail they're usually cheaper than the cloud style. Like here but on these if there's ever. An issue all you do is you tighten the. Clamp here and push it back and it's. Basically you're good to go on your fixed where's the twist lock style if. That mechanism ever goes or breaks on. Your fails it's the air hole holes basically wrecked no the one thing that. The best spool specifically there's two. Clamps two sizes what i do on. This guy it actually has that numbering. On it so it says how long your pole is so i kind of know what I'd like to have my poles preset up and i just you just adjust it to the measurement on there on. This guy you set them both to a 105. Centimeters to that you clamp it and. It's the same length every time both poles are the same you don't have to pull them up and measure them side by side it's quick it's easy. And this is carbon fiber and it is. Incredibly light compared to a lot of the trekking poles one guy i had in. Alaska actually commented on how shocked. He was at how well these poles held up because a lot of his clients would come up with cheaper poles, and they'd have. Their pole break during the trip or fail. At the clamps whether it's the twist lock er this style I'm not sure, but he. Was incredibly impressed how well he's held up because those guys typically use an ice axe as a walking stick out there. So kind of made me feel good that he. Thought they're good as well the other thing i really like to have one my trekking poles as these rubber tips you. Don't have to buy the black diamond version you can after market one but basically when. You're walking through the hiking through the mountains when you're up above treeline these poles have like a little metal tip on them and it's. Constantly going tick tick tick of the rocks so you want to have these keeps you a lot quieter plus your poles don't sink in to the mud. Sometimes when you're hiking if it's. Soft or when it's oil and you don't have. These tips on that narrow point drives pretty that drives the pole pretty deep into the ground and it can just be like a drag to keep pulling it out steadies. Even on the main trails i actually prefer these rubber tips all the time. I never take them off it's found one. Think i found made it walking way easier if you were going across the glacier ice. Like they have up in alaska in some. Places sheep on team you might want to. Take them off just you can dig into the ice but generally speaking if you're just if it's dry out dirt there's not a. Lot of ice that you're crossing these rubber tips, so they'll definitely the way to go but overall i give this wrap. Nepal a 5 out of 5. Spent grave never had a minute's issue with them and if you don't have a. Setting treky set of trekking poles you. Definitely need to get us that if your backpack hunting it'll make your life was easier the balance of your load. Helps balance your load when you're walking especially if it's on a incline or dropping down hills or silently just. Makes it so much easier and whatever you. Do just buy a good quality brad don't buy a cheap brown just because of the. Price spends the money get a good pair and go from there.
