Everybody they had a friend asking about the purpose of the burg on a fleshing knife on the sheriff side of the fleshing knife. It there and just what exactly. What it does it work on I’d say just. Any flushing knife you’re gonna sharpen your knife as sharp as. You can sharpen it with your diamond file. Whatever you like so. That you’ve got a bevel like. You don’t want to sharpen the backside. Or remove material from the backside of the blade. You just want to sharpen. That like you know. How to do and then the next thing is to roll the burr onto. That knife that burr changes it’s exaggerated in. This drawing but so. You get an idea of what direction the burr is pointing and. When you’re fleshing your moving. That burr in that direction down the hide to flesh the fat. And tissue off but the way. That burr on just take the back of your skinning knife.

Or your sharpening steel. Something hard and again here’s here’s the bevel on the back side is the flap. And just taking first. You can hear now I’m pushing. That burr off of this knife. One I’m rolling it one way you’re straightening it aligning it. And then you turn the knife over. And on the back side. You start out at a fairly shallow angle push. And then increase the angle. What that’s doing is rolling. That burr over so that it’s pointing this direction. When my fingers pointing you can feel. That pull your thumb across. It’s real subtle but. You can feel that burr. You pull your thumb not like you’re sharpening feeling a regular sharp blade. And I’m just pulling my thumb down the bevel. You can feel that little burr there. That does it allow. You to have your angle of attack on the hide like.

This versus like all so prevents. That super sharp edge from cutting through. You can really you can push a little harder without blowing through the hide. Ilearned this from Greg Schrader. It made a huge difference in. You get through your reflection process so hopefully. This helps and pass. You know like it was a big light bulb moment for me. Ilearned about and want to help. This friend of mine out so. He can see what it looks like. What you can do with.

Alright guys so uh we’re going to talk about flushing knives today. And basically we’re going to cover two different things we’re going to cover steel quality. And the styles of commercially available flushing knives. You see I’ve got five knives here in front of. You know of course there are. Many manufacturers you know knives. These these are just the. That I’ve collected over the years but. Ireally want to concentrate on the Styles the difference in the styles. And then subsequently is steel available in the knives. Now over the years you know. You guys follow my channel. You know that I’m I’m big on for handling put up doing everything right. And with you know with the put up. It it’s very important to have a proper flushing system a system. You know being your beam. And your knife you don’t have a beam. That fits your knife then you’re not really going anywhere so. You know kind of an off side to. What I do with the fur handling I also decided. You know over the years. Iwanted to become proficient with. All the styles available so the flushing knives. And subsequently I’ve collected. These knives over the years so anyway we’re going to talk about the styles for the. Most part you know. You see a you see a knife like. This per se uh in a catalog. You see a picture of. It that’s you see a picture. You know you don’t get to really see the size. You know the you know in depth detail. You know of the knife it’s hard to see. What you get just from a picture so. This video hopefully will help. You know people looking for a new knife.

Or the first knife you know. Ikind of get a better idea of what they’re purchasing uh. Iwill say if you’re getting into the the fur handling by the best knife. You can afford you know in my experience. You know it’s one of them deals. What you pay for so anyway we’re just going to go through here we’re going to start. This in we’re going to move forward I’m going to talk to. You about basically the four different styles of the command from commercially-available flushing knives uh first off with we’ve got our kind of our entry-level. You know your 15 dot $20 cheap knives. You know it’s got the same style of. Some of these but it needs its own category just. Because the way it’s made you’ve got. You know your wide and your narrow. And your medium versions of these knives next we’re going to talk about the big wide knife. You see here the next. One is going to be this is a MV cutting edge it’s kind of its own style but we’re gonna talk about.

This knife and then you’ve got. These two here these are. More of your skinny knife so we’ll start off with here we’re going to talk about. This knife this is a. You know your entry-level run in the middle fifteen twenty dollar knife um. Nothing wrong with these knives. You know there’s lots. And lots of fur put up every year with. These knives they’re a mild steel which means it’s a very soft steel doesn’t hold an edge very good but. You know they’re they’re cheap. These knives do not come with a shaving side the shaving side. And the side you would do the back of the neck. You know shave a viewer with on. This knife these are. All my personal knives. Ihave actually ground a shaving side into the front edge of.

This knife it works fairly well. You know not as good as. More quality knives but. It still works good all-around knife like. They come in this skinny version kind of a medium inch. And a half with blade. And then like a three inch blade so. Some variations there ok next knife here we’re going to talk about is the wide knife. This particular knife here. This is a custom-made least time Meyer knife it’s a beautiful knife good material good stainless steel blade it’s a big heavy beefy knife. You know if you’re uh. If you’re doing you know a lot of big aughter beaver deerskins buffalo. You know you you know. You use the weight of the knife to help. You push this is a very good knife. You know other makers of these are your green English. Or Sheffield’s you know.

If it’s a it’s a big night. This knife here came with a sharp side on. Both sides I dulled the pushing edge to my specs. You will a you know a blunt edge is. That but there’s a little bit variation in. That blunt edge how shark. You actually want your blunt edge so it’s easier to dull a knife. It is to sharpen it sharp. And then you dull the way. This knife works is you’re shaving edges right here. You work and then in order to push. You actually have to flip the knife over. And push where with the narrow knife you’re shaving like. And then to get to your pushing edge. You simply just flip the knife. This way very good knives. Iwill say these knives work a lot better on a.

More of a horizontal beam presentation. If you’ve seen the beam. Iuse it’s a it’s a lot steeper of an angle. More of a vertical angle. Because the angle of these knives. You can see it has a bend in. It it’s a lot more difficult to get the angle right. Whenever you’re right over top the knife as opposed to. If you’re out here with a horizontal presentation nonetheless very good knife like. You can use the weight of your knife to your ability to fade. You very good knife the next knife. We have here this is an MV cutting edge knife it’s it’s a high carbon steel blade Austrian main blade it’s manufactured by Minnesota trap line products it’s kind of its own style. You can see the style of it’s very different from from the rest of these knives the handles are.

More of a straight set up as opposed to following a natural curvature of the knife. They say that’s for fatigue issues the blade itself is a very wide blade a very long blade. You know as compared to. This knife here you know. Another six inches of blade. This knife comes to. You sharp all the way across the idea being. Either leave the knife sharp. And then use like a lesser quality knife for your pushing or. You can do what I’ve done to. This knife what I’ve done is I’ve went from right here over I’ve left. That sharp very sharp. And then from right here over. Idulled that knife there’s no flipping of. This knife you know see you’re going at.

It say you’re going on a coon. You get to the back of the neck on a coon. You have your shaving side. Because the knife is so long. You can work out your shaving knife. You get down say done with the back of the neck then. You just simply move the knife over. You go to pushing with your dull side a very good knife there’s a little bit of a learning curve to. This knife but you figure out. That learning curve. It is a very very efficient knife. You you can go going some speed with. This knife a very very good knife just. Another different style okay. And our for style we’re going to look at is. What these two knives are here your skinny knives. This knife here this is probably the.

Most recognizable knife to the fur handling community. This is a a Necker 600 knife it’s pretty much the knife. All skinny knives are are designed off of you’ve got a cutting edge right here a sharp side. And then you flip the knife over. And you’ve got your pushing side a good knife stainless steel holds an edge fairly well you’ve got big handles on. You know keep your hands from running down you’ve got a pretty steep curve to. You know you need to get. That beam to fit that not have to be kind of fish. It with you’re pushing a very good knife up. Iflushed thousands. And thousands of Coons with. This knife it is a good knife it’s got a very very little short learning curve to. It that’s the skinny knife style. Isaid guys I’m trying to be as unbiased as as. Ican with these knives. Because I’m not pushing for one particular brand. Ijust kind of wanted to get get a video out there. That talks about the different styles of variations we’re going to move on to.

This knife another version of the skinny knife. Many many many manufacturers of the skinny knives. You know there’s lots of them. These are just the manufacturers. Ihappen to own a this is a post knife brand is post a very very high quality steel in. This knife this knife is very hard stainless steel it’s got a rockwell hardness of 56/58 hrcI’ve got a lot of them. II can use them all very proficiently my answer to the question for people who always ask. What is my favorite flushing knife my answer always is the. You feel most comfortable with. That being said you know. You can pick up a two hundred dollar fishing knife. You can find one you can’t. You might not be able to use. You know as well as. This this little knife it’s. What you get comfortable with. That being said the steel. And a knife is very important to. You know the fact I mean a knife will dull. Though you’re just pushing fat with. You know or shaving you know hide. They will dull and so steel is very important also I’m not going to get out of.

This video I know without saying what my preferred knife is. And like I put up lots. And lots of fur with. These knives but hands down my favorite. Most preferred knife of these anyway. This post knife it’s a joy to work with like. Iprefer a super super sharp cutting edge. This knife gives me the ability to have. That it’s got just a little bit of flex to. It a little bit than the Necker not a big deal. When you’re really pushing because you’re not really pushing cross way you’re pushing more of a down just just a good comfortable knife to use. You can get a lot done with. It so anyway guys that clears a. Few things up I said primarily for people in the market for knives. Ijust kind of wanted to go through the variations. And different styles of the Flushing knives. This video clear a lot of things up for some people. You know like it it’s hard to know. What to get from a picture.

All means I didn’t go into into depth depth on. Each particular knife. If there is a lot of interest in. That feel free comment. Iget a lot of interest in. One particular knife then by. All means I will do a. Another video on just a review of. That knife but more of just kind of an overview um. You guys enjoyed until next time.
